Re: How would you rank David Lynch's films?
I hated it for many years - everytime i watched it from VHS in cropped to 4:3 on small screen i hated it more.David Locke wrote:7. Wild at Heart (only Lynch I've seen I really dislike)
Until I had a chance to see it on a BIG cinema screen. And I'd love it. It's one of my Lynch's top 3 films!
So, IMO if you didn't see it in a cinema on big screen, you didn't see it at all!

Holy Cow! Talk about the hardest list I've ever had to rank!
-Lost Highway
-Dune
-Straight Story
-Mulholland Drive
-Twin Peaks: FWWM
-Wild at Heart
-Elephant Man
-Eraserhead
-Blue Velvet
-Inland Empire
Of course, there are slight changes in rank depending on my current state of mind.

1. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
2. Inland Empire
3. Blue Velvet
The rest follow in a somewhat precarious order. I never liked Mulholland Drive much and Eraserhead needs a re-watch.
Still haven't seen The Straight Story, Dune and Elephant Man.

Re: How would you rank David Lynch's films?
I honestly wouldn't be able to make that list. There's so many ways in which one can assign a certain amount of value to a film and it's too hard to pick one of them. So far, I'm a bit surprised by how low the Straight Story has been ranked, as it always struck me very deeply.
Inland Empire, Fire Walk With Me and The Straight Story are my favorite films by Lynch.

FWWM
Lost Highway
Mulholland Drive
FWWM Q2 edit (is this allowed??)
The Straight Story
Blue Velvet
Wild at Heart
Eraserhead
Inland Empire (I need to rewatch this I admit)
Yet to see Dune or the Elephant Man. I do have a fan edit of Dune with deleted scenes squeezed in. I don't think i own Elephant Man.

Extraordinary filmmaker. Wild At Heart would be comfortably higher than 7 in any other directors greatest films list. I consider seven of his films to be masterpieces. Mulholland Drive was Lynch's greatest film because it was the result of all that came before it. His artistic intent was never clearer or more accurately transferred to the screen as it was for Mulholland Drive, and the film incorporated elements of Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks and Eraserhead.
