Peaks Fans Top 15 Movies

Post by TwinsPeak »

I did a top 10 TV shows on here and it got a lot of replies so I figure why not movies?

15. The Prestige
14. Jurassic Park (just the 1st)
13. City of God
12. Back to the Future (just the 1st)
11. Full Metal Jacket
10. The Godfather (all)
9. Lord of the Rings (the 1st 3 movies)
8. Goodfellas
7. Muholland Dr
6. Pulp Fiction
5. The Pianist
4. One flew over the cuckoo’s nest
3. Fire Walk with Me
2. Schindler’s list
1. Stand by me

Top 5 Lynch movies
5. Wild at Heart
4. Dune
3. The Straight Story
2. Muholland dr.
1. Fire Walk with Me

My list changes over time and I find this list not as easy to make as the TV shows list but oh well. Other people’s TV show list did give me a lot of good shows to watch so……What’s your top 15 movies?

Rear Window is my all-time favourite. Then there's lots of others, but I'd find it difficult to rank them. I'm comfortable just having my top favourite movie in case anyone ever asks me lol, then a rough list of others, but not ordered by preference. I love Scream, Scream 2, Dolores Claiborne, Misery, Dial M for Murder and most other Hitchcock films, Mulholland Drive, FWWM, Blue Velvet, Limbo and other John Sayles movies. Sunset Boulevard. The Bedroom Window. Silence of the Lambs. Lots of 80s and 90s movies, often but not always thrillers, and Hitchcockian stuff.

I'll have to think about others. There's a lot more.

I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.

Great idea for a thread! I'm much more of a film than a TV guy, so this will be just a thing for me. However, if I start thinking about this now, the whole evening will just fly away, so just a few quick thoughts for now.

I've seen everything you mention besides Jurrasic Park, City of God, The Pianist, and Stand by Me. Is Stand by Me really that good? I was just reading an Indiewire article earlier today about Wil Wheaton's experiences starring in that film, and decided that I have to finally see it since, well, I'm in the process of watching Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Wesley Crusher is, together with Mr. Data, my favorite character.

Very interesting. Fire Walk with Me and Mulholland Drive are my favorite Lynch films, but the rest you mention are among my least favorite. Makes me wonder if some rewatches are due?

I wouldn't rank Stand by Me as my favorite film of all time, but yeah, it's a great movie, particularly if you saw it in childhood, becomes like a half remembered dream that lingers.

Lot of great, great choices here so far.

15. Badlands (Malick)
14. Three Women (Altman)
13. Grizzly Man (Herzog)
12. Paris, Texas (Wenders)
11. Wild Strawberries (Bergman)
10. Au Hasard Balthazar (Bresson)
09. Dreams (Kurosawa)
08. Holy Mountain (Jodorowsky)
07. Come and See (Klimov)

04. The Mirror (Tarkovsky)
03. Nymphomaniac (Director's Cut; Trier)
02. Inland Empire
01. Synecdoche, NY (Kaufman)

A separate smaller list for animation:

05. The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Takahata)
04. Innocence (aka Ghost in the Shell 2; Oshii)
03. Pom Poko (Takahata)
02. End of Evangelion (ending to the series Neon Genesis Evangelion; Anno)
01. Tale of Tales (Norstein)

A director I like more for his body of work than any particular movie (which, honestly, goes for Lynch too); Todd Solondz.

Special mention, more of an extended music video; Book of Days by Meredith Monk.

A film I can't say is good but admire and feel is essential viewing because it's unique in its failures; Southland Tales.

Recipe not my own. In a coffee cup. 3 TBS flour, 2 TBS sugar, 1.5 TBS cocoa powder, .25 TSP baking powder, pinch of salt. 3 TBS milk, 1.5 TBS vegetable oil, 1 TBS peanut butter. Add and mix each set. Microwave 1 minute 10 seconds. The cup will be hot.

top lynch features for me -

1. Mulholland Drive
2. Blue Velvet
3. Dune
4. Lost Highway
5. toss up between Eraserhead and The Elephant Man.

Eraserhead very organic, unfiltered,
but I really love Freddie Francis' photography and the emotions in The Elephant Man , the
performance by Freddie Jones, so many things about it.
I think some folks like Roger Ebert took the sympathy theme as a given and wanted something more complex,
but there is actually a lack of empathy in the world, and I wouldn't take it for granted.

If I were to consider his Twin Peaks: The Pilot and The Return as features - they'd be right up there at #2 and #3 for me.

top Lynch shorts

1. The Grandmother
2. The Alphabet
3. On the Air - the pilot
4. The Three R's
5. Dumbland ep #1

If I had to name a "favorite" movie, it might be Blue Velvet. Eraserhead would probably be my second Lynch with the rest constantly shifting including Mulholland which I actually feel is his worst.

Some other "favorite" movies in no particular order would be:
Dawn of the Dead
2001: A Space Odyssey
Videodrome
Halloween
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Synecdoche, New York
American Beauty
I DON'T FEEL GOOD!!!!!

You should probably watch all 4 of those movies before I say anything about them. I like Star Trek TNG as well.

I'm already starting to feel like I need to switch in Lost Highway for Wild at Heart.

I wouldn't rank it as one of my all-time favorites, but Red Road by Andrea Arnold is worth a look if you want to watch something voyeuristic and suspenseful, very much influenced by Blue Velvet, Rear Window I'd say.

Number #1 is easy. The rest are in no particular order.

Off the top of my head in the mental fog of a Monday morning (and yes, my Top 15 would include these Lynch films):

1) Mulholland Drive
Lost Highway
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Twin Peaks: The Return (why not? Lynch said it was a film)
The Straight Story
Blue Velvet
To Kill a Mockingbird
Silence of the Lambs
Deliverance
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Full Metal Jacket
City of God
Bully (Larry Clark)
Memento
Alien
Excalibur (if I don't count TP: The Return as a film)

Later when I return home from the office and glance at my movie case my reaction will be "oh no - I forgot this and that and that . . . )
