To me, what's great is that this rumour (although now pretty much confirmed as rubbish) has got people talking about possible future directions! Whether or not it'll ever happen, it's so great to hear everyone's ideas and I hope this chat continues for a while longer.

I agree with a previous poster who said that a revival backed and driven by Lynch would never be as expected. I don't think David would ever write or create something just to cement TP's place in TV history - but he'd still manage to do it anyway, by accident.

His motivation is to produce something faithful to these mysterious ideas that come from nowhere and nothingness. That's what makes them unpredictable and special... they're not forced. I actually think he probably already has a good idea of what he'd do with the series, but maybe not yet enough to create the whole thing. I also sincerely believe that he would still feel extremely reticent about returning to television. (Btw I certainly think Lynch always needed, and still needs Mark Frost to anchor his ideas down into something that most people can handle.)

IMO TP3 will never happen as a full series... however, as per dugpa's slightly mysterious front-page post, I do think we could see something in 2014. Maybe web-based? Maybe a stand alone episode/film? Maybe something all together different?!

PS- This reminds me that on this year's Xmas edition of Celebrity Mastermind, Ewan MacIntosh (The Office UK) picked Twin Peaks as his specialist subject (whilst wearing a Dale Cooper T-shirt)! I did pretty darn well but had a few brain farts!

I wonder if they would invite Lara Flyn Boyle back...

Sucks. What sucks even more is that I would have loved for Jen Lynch to have a more active role in any future incarnations of Twin Peaks.
Agreed. I had always dreamed that she would take the reigns one day.

Because of her great relationship with Sherilyn Fenn, I had always dreamt that in a Twin Peaks continuation, Jennifer Lynch would take over and it would follow Episode 29 with Annie dying in the hospital, Wheeler's plane crashes, and Cooper would be institutionalized.

Audrey would grow up and join the FBI and eventually come back to Twin Peaks to investigate either a murder similar to Laura Palmers or the disappearance of Cooper from the sanitarium.

HA! What can I say but...great minds? In my fantasy Twin Peaks continuation, I always imagined an older FBI Agent Audrey Horne coming back to town as well to solve a new mystery. Too funny.

With all the hub bub of the past few days, I can't help but wonder what Lynch's deal really is against any continuation of Twin Peaks in any form. I can't help but feel like there's a story behind the story there; certainly Lynch was far more optimistic around the time they were making FWWM, and even teased there could be more Twin Peaks centric films. And then the critical/box office reaction to FWWM was what it was, and ever since he's been so butthhurt about it he just refuses to throw the fans a bone, like when he killed Matt Haley's graphic novel with Robert Engels that was to be included on the DVD set. It would be one thing if Episode 29 was always meant to be Lynch's final statement on Twin Peaks...but we all know it wasn't, it was just made to have enough cliffhangers to force ABC to renew the show.

For a long time I thought it was simply the fact that he didn't want to make something where he'd need Mark Frost (as the co-creator/co-owner of the property) to either sign off on or make half the profits on. I just assumed they'd had some kind of falling out, and Twin Peaks was their kid caught in the middle. But recent comments from Frost make it seem like they're still chummy, so I wonder what it is?

It just seems sad that as we all approach the "25 Years Later" point, we are lucky enough that most of the principal players are not only alive and kicking, but still viable...Lynch, Frost, Badalamenti and MacLachlan, all still working. (I know we've lost Frank Silva, but he could be replaced with a look alike; it's not an "acting part" per se) The fact that almost everyone is still around and willing (with the exception of Lynch) is such a fortunate occurrence, it feels like a colossal shame not to take advantage of it.

For the record, my ideal scenario is not a fully fledged "season 3" like what was rumored, or a reboot a la 90210 or Dallas, but a mini-series that continues the story but also celebrates the legacy of the show. And it isn't something I would necessarily need Lynch to direct every minute of either.

I was liking the idea of it opening with a recreation of the "25 years later" dream sequence from episode 2. With a twist of some sort, perhaps...

Though Frank Silva is no longer with us, I always thought Vincent Castellanos (Mulholland Dr.) could play the part...

Dang.

I think Mark Frost would be way more interested bringing Twin Peaks back to life than Lynch. You can also feel it through some of his tweets, which occasionally I read.
The "25 years later" sentence is been always pretty weird to me... I mean, it was intentional or not? If yes, then Mr. Frost and Lynch should have lot of more questions and misteries to show us. The weird thing is this... that the show will actually come back in 2015! I hope this is not been programmed back in 1990 otherwise Lynch would be totally crazy to me :)

And then the coffee, which I think is the nevralgic center of the entire show... I'd like to see if some of my theories will have answers :)

What does it mean for you "25 years later"? I have a simple solution for this, which is in fact weird...

Just heading here to post those links. Thoughts: that has to be the quickest turn around from a complete shoot down to a vague possibility in history, even by Twin Peak's standards.

I'm morbidly curious about this. TP speaks to me like few other things I've ever encountered in life. I love it more than I can say and it speaks deeply to me, like it does to most people on here. So either nothing happens and I still hold the same feelings for it or something new comes along & it's either amazing, average or rubbish. In which case I either get to add something more to the thing I love or there is something out there that doesn't affect the thing I love.

I actually hope this happens. In recent years Lynch seems to have made a fair few comments on the subject of TP of how special that world is to him, so I don't think it's out of the realms of possibility that he'd do something, but in my heart of hearts I really feel nothing will happen as he'll stop it.

As promising as the NBC exec quote was - the quote from Lynch's daughter was pretty definitive. Also Frost made a semi derogatory remark about NBC on Twitter a couple of days ago.

At the worst, this will get Lynch and Frost thinking about what they can do with the series as a real possibility. There is a snowball's chance in hell that a network will give them the freedom they need to agree or do it the right way, but who knows! The past few days I've been reminded of the TP project that Lynch posted on his site soon after he launched, where Laura was looking up with the text "what does she see?" overlaid. We know he has thought it in the past 12 or 13 years so maybe now he will act on it!

I'm a new poster and a long time fan, and I just want to say that I think this is probably it, if nothing happens in the next 2-3 years it will never happen. MacLachlan is going to be too old, even for 25 years later, and too many cast members will have died off, to do anything that remotely resembles Twin Peaks unless it's a complete reboot and everyone is re-cast.

Having said that, I wish Lynch would consider it, because TP is his one work that isn't self contained (unless you count Dune, but it's really its own animal in terms of the lack of creative control and the fact that it bombed). I'm also in the minority, but I think that the second season really gets overly criticized and brilliantly found its way when Annie was introduced and Windom Earle began his scheme. My personal take is that even though I really loved the secondary characters, TP was always ultimately Cooper's and Laura Palmer's story (and Laura's was book ended nicely with FWWM). As long as those two characters exist, it can still be Twin Peaks and it can still be meaningful.

The big risk, though, is that Lynch could forever tarnish his legacy. I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed Dune, probably because I wasn't old enough to see it when it came out and I hadn't read the book prior. I don't think Lynch has made a bad film, though of course I enjoy some more than others. But, to me, even though he will be forever remembered for Blue Velvet and Eraserhead, Twin Peaks was his crowning achievement. It is one of the most unique works of art, that utterly defies categorization, that I have ever encountered. I think that Lara Flynn Boyle's comments really illustrate that divide between those who wanted season 1 to continue forever, and those who saw the seed of something that had never been done before and hasn't been attempted since. The meat and potatoes fan gladly swallowed down the quirky characters and murder mystery, but when their intellect and sensibilities were challenged, chose to spit it out. Some of us were willing to venture deeper, into more challenging territory. Where Lynch could have taken us in 1992 is difficult to say, but the question he has to ask himself is whether he can still go there and be true to himself? If he thinks he can't, then I don't want something that isn't true to his original concept, and I'm okay to want more rather than wish I'd never gotten a Twin Peaks sequel at all.

I enjoyed every frame through the end of FWWM, and sometimes there is something to be said for leaving them wanting more. At the same time, it's the one hole in his legacy, because even though Laura's story was finished, Cooper's wasn't. But I don't think any of us can know whether Lynch believes he can still truly tell Cooper's story in a way that is true to his original vision this many years later, I only hope that before he retires he will give us a straight answer. If a network won't put up the money without taking control away, I can live with that. I just really want to know if Lynch thinks it can still be done.

Well, the good news is that it sounds like we're kinda-sorta-but-not-really getting our new Twin Peaks reboot, after all. The bad news is that it's M. Night Shyamalan making it. :? Glad to see M. Night is continuing to be as derivative as ever.

Shyamalan to do 'event' series for Fox

POSTED: Tuesday, January 8, 2013, 12:19 PM

M. Night Shyamalan is moving into the TV miniseries business.

Fox Tuesday announced the Wayne-based filmmaker would executive-produce a "long-form event," "Wayward Pines," based on the novel "Pines" by Blake Crouch.

(For "long-form event," read "miniseries," but of the 10- to 12-part variety that broadcast networks haven't done regularly in many years.)

Here's how the network's describing the project:

"'Wayward Pines' is an intense, mind-bending thriller evocative of the classic cult hit “Twin Peaks.” Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions. What’s wrong with Wayward Pines? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the life he knew, from the husband and father he was, until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive."
