Prince
Does anyone here listen to Prince? I'm a huge fan. His new website came out out yesterday (same day as David's!) and, for a membership fee, you can access it and download his new albums for free. The albums are actually really great, possibly his best in a decade. They're officially released through Target on the 29th for only $12 for all three so it's a pretty good deal. If David Lynch did a documentary on Prince it would be a dream come true for me.
Re: Prince
I saw the ad in the Sunday paper. I'm not a fan, but it does look cool. Enjoy!

I am a huge Prince fan. I've been listening to him since I was in grade school. I have all his cds, and have been lucky enough to see him in concert. Talk about a performer, he must have played at least 10 different instruments on stage. I've been to a lot of concerts in my life, and that one definitly ranks in the top 5!

Awesome! I totally agree with you about his live performances, he is unparalleled on stage. What tour did you see him on? I've seen him on the Musicology Tour, Tamar's tour, and twice on the 21 Nights tour two Summers ago.BobbyPeru wrote:I am a huge Prince fan. I've been listening to him since I was in grade school. Re: Prince
I believe he was calling it "the greatest hits" tour. I may be wrong about this, due to the fact I was still drinking back then. lol. I'd say it was about 8 years ago at Summerfest. It was supposedly the last time he was going to perform all his greatest hits.yvanehtnioj1214 wrote:Awesome! I totally agree with you about his live performances, he is unparalleled on stage. I remember I first got into his music when 1999 came out. I'd say it must have been 4th or 5th grade. I totally loved the whole Minneapolis scene in music that came out during that time : The Time, Jesse Johnson, Sheila E., Vanity, etc. I have all his stuff except for those new cds that came out. Did you say, you can only get them at Target? What other of his cds would you compare them to?

Re: Prince
It sounds like you saw him during the One Nite Alone tour. He says that he's going to retire certain songs all the time only to play them again during the next tour, for instance, he said he wasn't going to play "1999" after his New Year's Eve show in 1999 but has played it countless times since then. I even read an interview from 1980 where he said he wouldn't do any more tours after that year.BobbyPeru wrote:I believe he was calling it "the greatest hits" tour. Yes, in the U.S. you can only buy the new CDs at Target or for free with a $77 per year membership to his new website. I'd compare one of the albums, Lotusflow3r, to Around the World in a Day and The Truth. It's not a perfect comparison, but there's a lot of unpolished-sounding guitar mixed with some psychedelia. MPLSound, the other album credited to him in the set, sounds a lot like Dirty Mind. This album is a lot more electronic-sounding and he uses a lot of drum machine beats. The other album, made by his new protege Bria Velente, is a nice bonus that's worth a listen but I wouldn't blame you if you listened to it only a couple of times.
Re: Prince
Thank you for the info! Can't wait to listen to MPLSound, Dirty Mind is one of my fav Prince albums. Does that bonus cd have any Prince on it? Or is it all Bria Velente?

Re: Prince
I was thinking of an idea to ask about everyones top 5 Prince albums. Instead of starting a new thread, I decided to start it on here. We really don't need two seperate Prince threads - so, here's mine:
1. Purple Rain (yes, I know it's cliche, but a masterpiece is a masterpiece!)
2. Dirty Mind
3. "Love Sign" album
4. Sign O The Times
5. The Gold Experience

Re: Prince
I actually got turned on to Prince when he did the Batman soundtrack. I was 15 when that movie came out and I was obsessed with it (still am, kinda). I bought the album and I loved the music so much that I started to check out his other stuff. Before long I was a huge fan.
Top five in no particular order:
Batman (still my favorite, actually)
Sign O' The Times
Purple Rain
Dirty Mind
Diamonds & Pearls
