Re: Part 2 of Journey Through Twin Peaks: The Center Cannot

Another example of Frost's literal approach failing in comparison with Lynch's intuitive, unexplained approach is in the clunkiness of the Windom Earle/chess/Lodges/Owl Cave stuff in the latter half of Season 2 vs. the masterful red room sequences in Lynch's final hour. I do actually enjoy Earle's ...

Re: Dopplegangers

Allthough I'm not 100% sure it relates to dopplegangers; Do you think it's a coinsidence that the show opens and ends with a person looking into a mirror...? (Josie and Coop) Between the opening credits and the opening scene of the pilot, there's so much doubling/twinning (Twin Peaks!) it almost ha...

Re: Animals

Yes, the Angriest Dog in the World is absolutely key if we're talking about Lynch and canines. Speaking of dogs, Leland/BOB howls like a dog in his jail cell when he's captured, and otherwise behaves like a mad dog who's been caged. Fantastic performance by Ray Wise. He sells it and then some. As d...

Re: The Owl Cave Ring - thematic significance

What was going on there in terms of agriculture and/or religious belief? Well he was wearing a crucifix, so if the Mayan/Indigenous motifs have any pertinence I guess that would add to the whole syncretism going on. One Mayan myth--the siguanaba--is usually portrayed as a beautiful young woman of q...

Re: The Owl Cave Ring - thematic significance

Just a few more observations along these lines... While the Maya worshipped corn (indeed, in the Popul Vu, humans are ultimately made of corn ), this belief system didn't extend as far south as Jeffries ended up... I've spent a good bit of time with Mayan communities in Guatemala. Not to belabor the...

Re: Twin Peaks scene identification help!

if that were the case, don't you think the person would probably also you know, maybe er, um, have an impression of something else with that scene -like some guy brutally murdering a girl in the middle of the scene. Memory is, er, um, fickle. Their description pretty much completely describes the s...

Re: Twin Peaks scene identification help!

They are definitely talking about The World Spins scene after Leland/BOB kill Maddy. No doubt about it. That's probably the single most powerful scene in all of Twin Peaks. Lynch at his most intuitive, artistic best.

Re: The Owl Cave Ring - thematic significance

I think Fernanda's idea that the symbol evokes corn is spot on. There's something very close to Mayan/native American corn worship going on with the whole garmonbozia thing, although turned on its head.Iit's like an evil version of the Popul Vuh.

Re: Interview with John Thorne, editor of Wrapped in Plastic

Man, thanks for posting all three parts of the interview. I purchased every issue of Wrapped in Plastic as they came out...I remember driving to Tower records (!) to buy them. Every issue was amazing. How quaint these days to think about going to a record store to buy a magazine... I love the idea t...

Re: Interview with Brad Dukes, author of Reflections

Brad--as a former English professor and a current publisher, I just want to say--your book is superb. I think I read somewhere that you self-published; if that's the case, it's one of the best self-published titles I've ever seen. Not only is the writing quality excellent, but the editing, design, l...

Re: The Bob/Leland relationship

I think the best way of putting it, for me at least, is less guilt/innocence than responsibility. As Lynch put it, "the war inside the father." I think for Lynch, especially in his later films, it's less about judgment than awareness. His characters rise and fall based not on mistakes the...

Re: The Bob/Leland relationship

This is all great stuff. But I think we are making it more complex than it is. I also think that a common feminist criticism--the writers let Leland off the hook and thus do a disservice to rape and incest victims--misses the mark. Bob is, and isn't, "real," within the artistic construct o...
