I think I remember reading somewhere that Lynch himself was a fan of 'Carnival of Souls'AgentEcho wrote:Doh! It's actually Woman in the Dunes.

Re: Movies to watch between episodes!
The River's Edge.
Directed by Tim Hunter, who directed several episodes of Twin Peaks S1-2.
Dennis Hopper in his role with a bizarre fetish, he's no Frank Booth but fascinating nonetheless. Crispin Glover, another Lynch oeuvre alumnus ("Wild at Heart").
You could play "6 Degrees Of Separation" with some of these more contemporary films and shows vis à vis TP:TR. For example: Ione Skye co-stars in River's Edge, and a few years later she starred in "Gas Food Lodging," an indie film early 1990s with a minor character played by Robert Knepper (boasting an Australian accent!)!
Edited to add: Chris Mulkey (Hank Jennings) also co-starred in Gas Food Lodging. I'd nearly forgotten.

Re: Movies to watch between episodes!
Just watched (most) of The Unholy 3, and while I can't say I think it holds up stylistically, I see some elements vaguely related to TP: a midget, a cross-dressing disguise, a murder. Everyone needs to check this movie out though for the performance of Harry Earles, the little guy. First of all he is great throughout, but it is otherworldly to watch a 28 yo man convincingly, yes convincingly, pull of playing a 18 month old baby! Absolutely unreal. It’s pretty clear Harry Earles was the inspiration for the cigar chomping baby in Baby Buggy Bunny (Buggs Bunny) and Baby Herman (Roger Rabbit). Cool, thanks for the recommendation.

Wow, you really undersold this movie. Altman here explores overlapping themes with Lynch, and artistically converges with him in places as well. I agree with claaa7 that every Lynch fan will get something out of this film (if they can survive the tortuous soundtrack).chromereflectsimage wrote:Robert Altman's '3 women' (1977) - Are they all the same person? Many parallels with Twin Peaks and Lynch, too many to list. The elderly parents and intimations of abuse and incest. The lengthy birth scene of course; Shelly Duval’s laugh is haunting and otherworldly. The most direct parallel for me was the doctor breaking the news about Pinky's coma and his sudden creepy advances on Millie, I had hot chills dropping down my spine reminiscent of when Leland tells Laura to clean under her fingernails in FWWM. A drastic shift in tone that announces the movie is not what you thought it was, it is something much darker. Worthy of repeat viewings if you enjoy the slow pace, as do I. Excellent recommendation! Thanks! Much different in style to every other Altman movie I've seen.

Night Nurse. Gable's villain could be straight out of a Lynch movie
Re: Movies to watch between episodes!
a lot of great recommendations in here... fans of Eraserhead and the dreamlike aspects of Lynch films need to check out a strange little independent film called "Institute Benjamenta" by the Quay Brothers. also has a great original soundtrack.

i'm sure you will love Altman's "Images" as well. it's also quite Lynchian in nature without revealing anything of the story.. from what i read both that and "3 Woman" were based on fully formed dreams that Altman received

Re: Movies to watch between episodes!
It's been too long since I watched "The Hustler" so I'm planning to again, soon.
Reasons for Peaks' worth is of course Piper Laurie.
You may or not agree, but I feel that the picnic scene evokes a similar feel, in setting/ backdrop, to the one shared by Laura and Donna, shown in flashbacks S1.
