World of Blue - Archived Forum 2007-2022

The Return gave us an idea of what a modern Twin Peaks would look like on cable, but what would it have looked like had it returned to ABC? Or what would the original series have looked like if it was premiering on a network now? Lost? Big Sky? Something else? Or it's unique Lynchian charm but transposed to the 2020's? Would they "get away" with more now - or less? And I don't just mean in terms of thematic things, but also tone, artistic vision. I actually feel there might be less leeway now on a network than more for some reason, despite more risque things being allowed now (totally different story if on a streaming service of course). Thoughts?

Twin Peaks on network television in our insane current invoronment would, IMO, be an utter disaster.

Yep. I was stunned by what Twin Peaks got away with on a network that would probably reject this show if it was shopped to them now — three whole decades later.

I feel like even though cable has become more cutting-edge if anything network has become less risk-averse again. What was the last exciting groundbreaking network show? I feel Lost but even that was very commercial in its own right. I haven't really kept up with anything since but I can't remember hearing really great things about anything on a network since at least the mid-2000's? It's been all HBO, Showtime, etc...

Oh, I never watched it - but I've heard about it. Good example. Everything I read about it indicated it felt more like a cable show. And was it mainly an exception? I feel like overall most network shows are back to being quite tame.
