Directors you'd like to see play in Peaks

Post by Door at Eleven Steps »

This is inspired by the post 'Rank the Series Directors'. Who are some directors you believe could have added to the world during Seasons One and Two or could do the same in a hypothetical continuation/iteration? Here is a quick brainstorm list in no particular order:

1. E. Elias Merhige (Begotten, Shadow of the Vampire)

2. Jim Jarmusch (Down by Law, Dead Man)

3. Tom DiCillo (Johnny Suede, Living in Oblivion)

4. Anna Biller (The Love Witch)

5. Francis Ford Coppola

6. Freddie Francis (Cinematography on The Elephant Man and Dune)

7. Todd Phillips (Joker)

8. Gore Verbinski (The Ring, A Cure for Wellness)

Alfred Hitchcock, especially an episode where somebody dies.

Less unrealistically, Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick loved Eraserhead. Lynch likes Kubrick.

I can see Jarmusch doing something set in Deer Meadow. He could also do a bit mirroring the man-behind-Winkies scene from Mulholland Drive, with Audrey going behind the Roadhouse with Dr. Jacoby only to find Tom Waits singing "It's a sad and beautiful world."

Yeah, Jim Jarmusch could do something interesting with Twin Peaks.

It's weird, TP cuts across a few different genres and styles, and most directors are so narrowly stuck in one, so it's hard to think of one director that could so justice to all of TP's disparate elements. I think Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar) would be well equipped to handle both the soul crushing trauma of the Palmer family + the machinations of BOB & other Lodge characters, but might not do well with the show's police procedural + comedy elements. Whereas the Coen Brothers could easily handle the crime and comedy, but there's no telling where they'd land with the trauma of loss and the supernatural stuff.

I'm really glad that we never got Steven Spielberg directing the first episode of Season 2 back in the day. I can't even imagine what it would have been -- a bunch of close up shots of Lil' Nicky's face, as he experiences the wonder & awe of the Black Lodge? Not trying to slam Spielberg or his accomplishments, but I don't think his artistic vision would gel with TP.

Good post, Cappy.

Re: Ari Aster, Midsommar was actually pretty darn funny. That was a wild blend of tones.

I don’t really want to see anyone but Lynch direct Peaks going forward, but Leos Carax would probably be my top pick. I could also see Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) and Shane Carruth (Upstream Color), two of the Lynch-ier films I’ve seen, particularly in terms of pacing.

Agreed, ideally no one other than Lynch. Speaking for a hypothetical world where Peaks returned as it did in the 90s with the same kind of production schedule (thus requiring other directors), I'd rather go with people against type and not necessarily those who have made "Lynchian" films or who exhibit imitative Lynchian traits. Suggesting people like Jarmusch, Coppola, P.T. Anderson seems a little outlandish just because they're too singular to really fit anyway. I'd prefer moving away from the likes of Ari Aster, Robert Eggers etc who I think would just be boringly obvious picks and are pretty overrated anyway.
