Re: Lara Flynn Boyle Blogs Twin Peaks
I must say, I'm having the opposite reaction of most of the folks here. I've now swung in the direction of liking Lara again after reading her blogs. I mean, maybe she is a bullshit artist supreme, but my gut isn't telling me that. She writes just like what she says she is and has already been quoted: Understand, both my mom and I are very meat and potatoes type people.
I've gained new respect for Lara after being put off in earlier years by her hijinks with Jack Nicholson and alleged drug use (well, we all have issues). She had virtually no experience on film and as she said, she learned her craft while doing her role on Twin Peaks. It showed, and yet, David Lynch knew what he was doing casting her. Her rawness as an actor was a good fit for Donna's over-emotional, stakes always high behavior.
I loved how she talked about Lynch directing her -- God, what a genius he is. My best teacher always told us, "Actors are highly suggestible." Even if as she says, people laughed during the pilot, ("Now when you say, `I hear sirens,' think of it as like deer in the woods."Even after all these years, I can still hear his voice. "It's like deer in the woods.") I bet DL got the effect he wanted. These kids were like malleable clay in his hands even though some were clearly more experienced actors than others.
I don't follow all the ins-and-outs of Twin Peaks. Why some actors were involved in some projects and others not. Why does Lara have to explain her absence from Fire Walk With Me? I'm not being argumentative, I just don't get what debt it is she owes to anyone that she must be dumped on for not giving a satisfactory answer. What she did say could be her way of saying she doesn't want to talk about it. I thought it was pretty diplomatic, considering. And funny.
This impressed me as well: I do the work and move on. You're only as good as the day's work. Then it's back to the proving ground. It's a very rare ideal in her field. A lot of actors do rest on their laurels. Not her. Sounds like she's got her priorities clear, so more power to her. I really enjoyed the read and thank Jerry for alerting people at MySpace and supplying the links. Here too.

I too have no real issue with LFB. Not my fave actor in the world, but not my least either.Tonya J wrote: I don't follow all the ins-and-outs of Twin Peaks. The character of Donna is quite interesting, because to me she is slightly annoying and whiny, but that is absolutely right for the show and the storyline. I wonder if some might associate those character traits with the actor too closely.
Lara certainly doesn't owe anyone any explanation. I guess some folks (myself included) would've liked to have known the full story about her lack of involvement in FWWM. She allegedly called Lynch a pornographer and therefore wanted no part of the movie. Considering that the character of Donna was such a major part of Laura's story it would have been nice to have some consistency with the cast of the series. But perhaps as you say she was being diplomatic. In the end people can do and say what they want. Perhaps there is some regrets there...I don't know.
Having said all that I thought Moira Kelly did a amazing job in FWWM and as much as Lara's raw acting energy made for a strong character, I'm not sure she could have done as good a job as Moira in the movie. Just an opinion.

Nice to see you again, brokentiny. I've heard that before but have no way of knowing if it's true or not. I can imagine her mouthing off, being young and that "meat and potatoes person" who's not very sophisticated about filmmaking. The way she talks about DL now in her blogs reflects adult sensibilities looking back on a time she holds dear, or at least, that's the way it felt when I read it. If she did really say he was a pornographer, I hope she's deeply sorry and a bit ashamed. Ah, the folly of youth.brokentiny wrote:She allegedly called Lynch a pornographer and therefore wanted no part of the movie.
I don't dwell on these occurrences; however, I was thinking she might have done well in other of Lynch's films but she was too late (and too young) for Blue Velvet and beyond the right age by the time Mulholland Drive happened. It would have been kind of neat if DL had formed a little repertory company comprised of TP actors but I think Kyle was it, apart from FWWM.

Good response Tonya J, it's good chatting with you!
I pretty much agree with you too. I suspect it may have been the folly of youth if she did indeed say it.

I would love to read her blogs... Alas the links are long broken, and googling it brings up nothing. Did anyone happen to save?
Lara's Disappearance from the Web
Wow! I sure haven't been here in a long time. Some hurtful things happened to me over the last several years and I sort of limped away for awhile. Then I got a topic update by email today. Lara Flynn Boyle. She sure did make things hard on herself and has sort of become this laughing-stock figure for tabloid media - it's hard when I see that from time to time. What makes people be so extreme like that. I read my opinion above there circa 2007 and though I don't remember her MySpace blogs much, it's hard not to have sympathy for her.
I don't even know what she's doing artistically or otherwise anymore, but I flashed on the recent reelection of President Obama and all the hatred he had to withstand. I hope she didn't turn into a wing-nut like some actors have; I'm looking at you Janine Turner and Victoria Jackson, bemoaning the "End of America". Uh-huh. Right.

sorry about your rough time, Tonya -but great to see you back. you've been missed.
God, I love this music. Isn't it too dreamy?
Re: Lara Flynn Boyle Blogs Twin Peaks
Hi Audrey Horne! Thank you, that's very kind.
You know, it's serendipitous that I got an email about a topic post today. I'm getting ready to move, going through all my things once again and found that NYT Twin Peaks article you photocopied and sent to me. I don't remember the circumstances around that time, but I remembered you. I'm glad I kept that. I bought a couple of Richard's Twin Peaks photos in 2010 and now I have a nice new place to frame and display them. Good times.
