One thing about rotoscoping though is it takes a while and is expensive. I've met the casting director who did Darkly, and she said the movie took much longer than average to do. Then again, CGI technology gets better by the week these days and Darkly was, I think, almost entering a brave new world with this so it might be easier and cheaper to do if it were done now or a few years from now.

Yep, not quite there yet cost-wise or technology-wise. Do you know how much control the animators have over changes to the original film?

Not quite sure, but probably about the same amount of control animators would have when any motion capture technology is used. The animators can tweak some things but they are still very dependent on the actor to give a good performance. That's why people with a talent for that kind of stuff, like Andy Serkis, are in higher demand now.

Ok so it sounds like it's possible they could use the current actors to do the base filming and regress their ages thru the rotoscoping, but using actor doubles (so to speak) to fill in for the real mckoys and then remaking them thru rotoscoping would be unrealistic with the current technology. So I guess there are 2 options for getting the old TP continued going forward:

1) Rotoscoping using the current actors and creating a doctored animation based on the base film shot roughly

or

2) Develop the age progression/regression technologies further so virtual films could be built from scratch
