I picked up this book called "Moviemaker's Master Class: Private Lessons From The World's Foremost Directors" by Laurent Tirard (I know a really pretentious title).
I think this is translated from an original French book.
Anyway, there is a great interview with David regarding film school, his influences, his advice for young filmmakers and what he calls his secret Dolly move (including how he likes to frame shots, use contrast, lenses) plus a section on actors, obsessions, sound, experimentation and final cut.
I highly recommend this book (believe me, I've read a lot of crappy film books) as it has some great insights from about 20 directors including Coen Brothers, Tim Burton, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, etc.

That looks like a good book, suitable for a layman like myself it says. Quite a few directors in this book have their say which is interesting and as I have just started viewing Lars Von Trier's Riget I see he's in there.

I've got the book and it's a great read. Not only Lynch, but several other directors are worth reading about their history and their way of working. Recommended!
