Very strange. I ordered the book with album from the official DNOTS website, on the 13th. Just today, on the 14th, the listing on that site was changed to indicate that due to an ongoing dispute with EMI records, the album CANNOT be included with the book. Therefore a BLANK CD-R will be included, with a graphic on it. I was a little miffed that this information appeared after I placed the order. Also, there was no information on the site indicating that it was a pre-order, and I assumed it was available now.

And then I see today that it is a pre-order on Amazon. Still no confirmation that the book will have the album, though. The site seems to suggest that all 5000 copies of the book will not have the album.

Also, the book that is available on the site, comes with a poster.

If anyone has any info, it would be great to have this sorted out.

I contacted the DNOTS site, and am awaiting a response.

Cheers.

amazon.co.uk has a precise release date: 18 Jun 2009

Looks like it's just the book with a blank CD-R. I guess that's for all the folks who managed to rip the stream when it was briefly available.

Leave it to the record company to do something as boneheaded as threaten legal action if the CD is released.

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." -- Hunter S. Thompson

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

Does the Amazon version come with a cd? Or is it just a book?

I'm starting to feel like Carl Rodd right now.

I'm pretty sure the Amazon.com book will be the same as the one on the Website, except Amazon.com will be cheaper.

Chances are that it will probably be released online one way or another.

I just listened to the entire thing and think it sounds mighty fine.

Here's hoping they offer free lossless downloads of the album then. If Nine Inch Nails can do it, Burton certainly should.

That's what I was thinking. Hopefully we'll get a lossless release. The photos look nice, but listening to the songs on NPR's site, I'm really excited about this album. I just listened to the ones Lynch sings on, and they're amazing. I really like Ghosts of Love, and this seems like the next step from that with his singing.

Yes, I just received confirmation from the DNOTS website, that the book, as sold anywhere, including Amazon, will not have the album included with it, but the blank CD-R.

Sooo... that's $50 on the official website with the free poster, and $31.50 on Amazon... Pretty expensive for a poster.... but I still want it... and I guess if we go through the official website the profits will mostly go to the creative forces... choices...

Here is the official press statement:
A spokesperson for Danger Mouse says:

"Danger Mouse's new project Dark Night Of The Soul consists of an album length piece of music by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and a host of guest vocalists, along with a collection of original David Lynch photography inspired by and based on the music.

The photographs, which provide a visual narrative for the music, are compiled in a limited edition, hand numbered 100+ page book which will now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: "˜For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'

Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to release the recorded music for Dark Night Of The Soul without fear of being sued by EMI.

Danger Mouse remains hugely proud of Dark Night Of The Soul and hopes that people lucky enough to hear the music, by whatever means, are as excited by it as he is."

O.K. So the Amazon version comes with a cd-r as well. Why the legal problems though? This is a new project? Why was this given the go ahead without clearing all legal hurdles?

Damn hippies!
