Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Ha, am I allowed to say I was just bored? I understand the analysis and theorizing, but during the actual rollercoaster ride I want to go on the ride, and most of those first fifteen hours I was nodding off or being interested because of one foot stuck in the original series and filtering it through...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Frost and Lynch are great guys, and were juggling a lot. It’s easy to sit back and criticize- running a tv show ain’t easy. But I think it probably would’ve been to their benefit to have someone occasionally speak up along the way during the creative process. A lot of things are hard to catch when t...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

I forgot about Naido. Turning out to be a white woman with a bad haircut, and I guess an iconic reunion between Machlachlan and Dern from Blue Velvet, which was never iconic in the first place (compared to him and Rossillini) … I recently watched That whole green glove scene again. It’s highly enter...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Obviously it’s opinion, but it is impossible to divorce yourself from the Return not being part of the original run. I guess I can get it from viewers come into it never seeing the original series, and being dazzled by its innovation. And rain on parades? Ha, if this isn’t the thread to complain, th...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Yes. I’ve complained and used Ed and Norma as the most basic example of storytelling problems with the Return. Sure their union is wonderful, but we don’t even know the stakes leading up to it for fifteen weeks. It’s edited in the episode that Ed is even still stuck with Nadine (the dramatic stakes)...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Sylvia, I’ve missed you!! I stand by the mean spiritedness which makes me sad, and also the misguided misogyny that counters the “exploration” of rape and abuse when Lynch repeatedly uses young ingenue actresses to be in their parties and things while their men sharing the screen with them remain fu...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Wow, based on these comments, I have got to watch this show! Probably my main problem, not even what I feel are endless meandering scenes and a lack of a cohesive narrative spine to hang the Lynch ethereal on, is the overall tone. I feel it is so bleak and mean spirited to their babies, these charac...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Yay, new pages and posts complaining about TP the Return! Happy Holidays to me!! Throw in some FWWM and second half of second season and I’m over the moon! Too fast or too slow is not a problem for me if it’s done right. I could watch Bergman’s Persona all day long, or conversely Run Lola Run. For m...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Oh brother… I forgot all about that one. It doesn’t really change how I view the show though. It’s like when I watch the show’s first season and half of second, I don’t think of the Ben character is the same one having the Civil War fantasy. Or like when I watch Jaws, I’m not worried about the event...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Yea, I was just trying to get the conversation away from us potentially fighting. I don’t mean the performance in the Return differ in style from earlier seasons in terms of realism or style. Most of the best movies from the masters for almost a hundred years are stylized- and goes through periods o...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Was this heated debate all about the semantics of the term, “play ball with the audience?” C’mon, it’s a broad and general term related to this show used for short term for what we all know without compiling a twenty paragraph explanation. Showtime’s ad campaign of classic images leading up to the s...

Re: Season 4? Or is it over after this? Wisteria/Unrecorded Night? Something else? (Speculation thread.)

For me, the difference is 2001 is a two hour film going experience. You are going into the theater in 1967 and letting its total wash over you, it’s characters and visuals invent and exist beginning when the opening titles begin. And yes, it is extraordinary, and yes, Lynch’s work is outstanding as ...

Re: Season 4? Or is it over after this? Wisteria/Unrecorded Night? Something else? (Speculation thread.)

And so, so, so much of it! I loved Lynch making it eighteen parts, airing week to week and starting it off with The Giant saying, “listen to the sounds” and then it all adding up in such a meticulous way! And by loved, I mean taking a nail and a hammer to my hand and playing a fun game of tension. W...

Re: Season 4? Or is it over after this? Wisteria/Unrecorded Night? Something else? (Speculation thread.)

Excellent back and forth past few pages, especially about the art of writing. It’s a thankless art - truly in screenwriting- because if done right, it just flows with the narrative/world. And if it is done wrong, it sticks out like a sore thumb. I believe the case regarding the original actors and t...
