Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Attempting to find an intriguing thread in the Return is almost impossible for me. Amen. Leland's pain and struggle in the original was real. Not much real stuff going down in TR apart from the captivating scenes with Sarah, Dougie looking at Sunny Jim with sadness and a few other scenes I can't th...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

Yes, the whole green glove scene stomped all over the old TP mystique and left it for dead. A sad moment.

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

At the end of the day, there are so many storylines which have no connection with the world of TP whatsoever, so why call it TP in the first place? The Mitchum brothers, the Fusco brothers etc etc. So much airtime. Amusing taken as episodes on their own, with a strong Lynch vibe, but what do they ha...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

That sort of anti-nostalgia feeling can be felt throughout the show but it doesn't feel like a purely conscious decision. Yes, I'm sure a certain measure of it was intended and by design, but much of it comes across as a form of distaste and/or indifference from the creators. I'm sure many will dis...

Re: To the Profoundly Disappointed: Are You Still Disappointed?

I don't dwell on the plot details - I believe that is counter-intuitive to the methods of The Return, and I find it impossible to refer to parts of the story as never amounting to anything. It's about how it feels and the mood it conjures and the ideas that are contained within - to me, that's wher...

Re: Season 4? Or is it over after this? Wisteria/Unrecorded Night? Something else? (Speculation thread.)

I see some mention a strong element of "surrealism" in TR. In other words, don't expect a storyline. That makes the whole job a lot easier for any director. Just throw random scenes together -> surrealism ;) And you're basically not allowed to find it lacking because it's "surrealism&...

100% empathy towards Leland and Sarah in the pilot. But those are iconic scenes by iconic actors. Steven and Richard have some ways to go before they belong in that Hall of Fame. This is also the reason why I wish they had given more air time to the old cast, superior in every way. In response to &q...

Watching some of the episodes again, I feel the same way I did in the beginning. Many of the story arcs simply don't engage. Richard's hunt for money, the Mitchum brothers' plotting vengeance against Dougie, the drug addict acting out on Shelley's daughter, Jerry's struggle with his own foot. Some o...

Re: A Long Reflection...

Very well said, Jonah. Agree 100% that it's strange that they chose new characters in new locations over the chance to go back to the old ones while they're still alive. It would be more challenging for them but so much more rewarding if the results were good. Who cares about two casino brothers in ...

Re: The biggest problem with The Return - the fear/mystery element largely missing?

I agree with the comments saying that it would be hard to identify this as TP if you removed the TP references. Hutch and Chantal shooting at a man in Las Vegas suburbia for example. Doesn't have much to do with TP, does it? The Return is basically 17 hours of ideas that Lynch fell in love with and ...

Re: What is your Twin Peaks unpopular opinion?

If the first episode of The Return only featured 45 mins of footage of a pigeon sitting in a tree overlooking Dr. Amp's trailer, I am sure some people would have looked for (and found) meaning in that too. Ie, Lynch steps out of his comfort zone of the traditional narrative. For me personally a spad...

Re: The biggest problem with The Return - the fear/mystery element largely missing?

Watched FWWM again last night. While its slower tempo is a bit similar to The Return (even slower still), the fear element is on another level. The bonechilling effect when Laura holds onto Harold and her colors change. Or her finding Bob in her room. Arguably one scene like that in The Return, ie t...

Re: The biggest problem with The Return - the fear/mystery element largely missing?

I think another reason why it feels so different from the original show is the sedate tempo and the absence of music a lot of the time. Gives it a colder feel somehow.

The biggest problem with The Return - the fear/mystery element largely missing?

The original series as well as FWWM had this air of mystery from beginning to end. The flashlights in the woods, the woods in general, the owls, Leland, Laura's decline, Bob of course. Countless moments that were really frightening, perhaps culminating in Leland's "dance of death" in the l...
