Re: True Detective

I just feel like this season has no feel of direction to it. It doesn't seem to know where it's going, and it's already 5/8th's over with. Even the better episodes have a scattered, messy feel to them. The disparate plots don't really cohere in any way. It's just a big stew of various stuff, some go...

Re: True Detective

The third episode, which aired tonight, was actually quite good and certainly better than the first two. This season still has its flaws, but it's shaping up to be something fairly intriguing.

Re: True Detective

I re-watched Season 1 a few months back and appreciated it more -- I actually found I preferred the last few episodes to the much-praised fourth and fifth hours. It's not the masterpiece many call it, but it's still a fine season of television to be sure. But these first two episodes of Season 2 are...

Re: TP Season 1 & FWWM soundtracks set for new vinyl reissue

Any news? I cannot wait for these (particularly FWWM) and it's disconcerting that they seem to be virtually in the same situation as Season 3 is now...

Which do you prefer: Early Lynch or Later Lynch?

A Lynch retrospective at my local arthouse -- which divided Lynch's career into two parts just as I have -- made me ponder how different these different halves of his filmography are. I know some may quibble with where I draw the line, but I think it makes sense: while Wild at Heart has some transit...

Re: Journey Through Twin Peaks: the complete presentation

I was thinking today that a cool follow-up, eventually, would be Sopranos. I even know how I would want it to begin, though I ain't telling Yes, please, do this ;) The Sopranos is, in my not-so-humble opinion, the greatest television series ever, ever, ever. (Even though I personally don't think th...

Re: Lost Highway Vinyl LP

Wow, that's awesome. The original LP runs for like 200 or 300 bucks. I didn't know there was a new issue. edit: I just looked it up, I can only find it on discogs from one seller going for $75, and it's not on Amazon at all. Where'd you find a copy, and was it cheap? And on a similar note, WHEN are ...

Re: Top 10 Songs From Twin Peaks

It's amazing just how perfectly this beautiful, mysterious music (for both series and film) gels with the overall content/visuals and sticks in the mind as being practically inseparable from them -- and, as a result, the emotional and visceral reactions generated by them. In other words, I was on a ...

Re: David Lynch: Ranking His Movies From Worst To Best

Finally watched Dune, and I really liked it! I'm probably alone in ranking it 6th, but I found a lot to enjoy -- even though it's heavily flawed and not at all working on the same emotionally powerful levels as his best work. Here's what I just edited into my original post about the film: Yes, flawe...

Nice lists, guys! LITM, your top 100 has many of my personal favorites as well: Meshes of the Afternoon, Syndromes and a Century, The Big Lebowski, Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Rosemary's Baby, L'Eclisse, Au hasard Balthazar, Late Spring... all masterpieces.

Re: Episode 14

I absolutely love them both, but I think I'd probably put the finale just a hair ahead of 14 as the greatest episode. Just because 14, despite how amazing it is, does have a more traditional Peaks structure where there's a bunch of subplots (Shelly/Bobby, Harold, Nadine, Ben and Audrey, etc.) that o...

Re: Twin Peaks: Season Three confirmed for 2016 on Showtime

Ha, wow - I never thought about that so specifically. It is great, and oddly appropriate. There's a weird thing going on with Fire Walk With Me where on the one hand it feels more visually expansive than the movie (that shot inside the airplane as it's flying, in particular always makes me feel lik...

What are your favorite films (not including Lynch)?

Eyes Wide Shut (1999, Kubrick) -- the most haunting film I've ever seen. Also probably the most visually beautiful. The Passenger (1975, Antonioni) -- has some of the most lush colors and amazing and original camera-work ever (no, i'm not just talking about the famous penultimate shot). An existenti...

Re: True Detective

I've been wanting to re-watch Season 1, but long after the initial viewing (as it aired) I'm still disappointed. To be sure, the first 5 episodes are very good, occasionally outstanding, with a great rich atmosphere to them and some beautiful photography. But the 6th episode shows signs of stagnatio...
