Re: Episode 8 (Season 2 Premiere)

It's an interesting episode, that's for sure. I do like how it charts a new, darker and more supernatural course for the show -- and yet it feels a bit too long. There are just so many scenes set in the hospital with endless monologues that don't impress particularly much and endless, endless re-cap...

Re: Episode 1

I would probably also place this episode relatively low (at least in comparison to the first 16 episodes). I know the pilot with Lynch's direction (and the WA locations) is a tough act to follow, but I still always get this slightly disappointed feeling when I get to this episode after it -- sort of...

Re: Worthiest Missing Piece?

Without a doubt, the scene of Leland staring at Laura in the bushes before she rides off with James at night. It's so brief yet so damn chilling (the face Wise gives is evil incarnate), I really don't see why it was left out of the film -- especially as the cut in the film from Laura in the bushes t...

Re: Episode 17

Thanks Lost! The wake scene is so impossibly awful that I get a kick out of just exploring why and how such a thing could... happen. I almost think the slump episodes, this one especially, are just as fascinating (maybe even MORE fascinating) than the quality episodes, just because one wonders why a...

Re: Episode 17

God, that wake scene... *shudders* But the damage is done, I think, even before that, in fact: just as the episode begins. The end of Episode 16, concluding as it did the Palmer story, was like a fork in the road at which the show could have gone two ways -- either continue the show's fascination wi...

Would it be too much of a stretch to link the "shattered dishes" in the diner discussed above with the shattered dishes edit in MD that brings us from Adam's dinner party to Diane with the hitman at Winkie's...?

Re: Episode 28

I'd need to re-watch this episode again to give a more concrete opinion, but from memory I don't think I'd place it below most, or any, of the post-Leland, pre-Gordon's return episodes. It's definitely not one of the show's best hours, and you guys have pointed the flaws out well, but it also works ...

Re: The style of LH compared to FWWM, and other assorted thi

Many, many people feel similarly about Inland Empire's look and yet for me there's something kind of magical about that grungey, home-video aesthetic. Something very punkish as if by paring his style down to the bare minimum we are actually seeing the raw spiritual undercurrent of all his works in ...

Re: The style of LH compared to FWWM, and other assorted thi

Yeah, the pilot footage is full-frame 1.33. I've seen bits and pieces of that and it's just kind of hum-drum and somehow depressing; impossible to separate from the film, which is such a different beast. The pilot also kind of dilutes the experience of the film, so I try to avoid being too familiar ...

Re: The style of LH compared to FWWM, and other assorted thi

I never considered that before, but it would make a lot of sense if some of the more alienating gestures of Episode 8 (the protracted opening of course, but also the graphic ending which far surpassed any hint of the murder we'd seen to that point) were a result of Lynch feeling increasingly frustra...

Re: The style of LH compared to FWWM, and other assorted thi

Well said. A lot of great artworks come about due to an unrepeatable, almost magical convergence of circumstances both intentional and wholly accidental, and I think this certainly describes FWWM to a T. This kind of "happy accident" way of filmmaking is the norm for Lynch, but never has i...

Re: The style of LH compared to FWWM, and other assorted thi

Wow, great post. I agree with pretty much everything you say and felt like you conveyed the texture and feel of the film extremely well. I think Lost Hughway is definitely a "cold" film in a sense and yet in a way it feels less cold to me than Lynch's early work, even Blue Velvet (which m...

The style of LH compared to FWWM, and other assorted things

Just came back from a 35mm showing of Lost Highway at my local arthouse and it was incredible of course. I'd seen it in 35 before but had virtually no memory of it, so this was wonderful. Similar to Blue Velvet and Mulholland, which I've also had the luck to see on 35mm, the sound is maybe the most ...

Re: True Detective

Yes, definitely the best ep of the season so far. Very visually striking and much of the dialogue actually landed fine. The director did a great job.
