Re: Carnivàle - newbie!

Yep,fine ensemble acting and a strong hand on the narrative. Too bad it did not have more seasons.
The 'pitch document' on wiki is well worth a read.

Re: Last Film You Watched

TMC Silent Film Fest has come to TV. I saw the 1914 Cecil B. Demille The Squaw Man ( of little artistic or even historical interest); The current and most complete restoration of Fritz Lang 's Metropolis . lol, the holy grail of archivists. I find it amusing that they still do not know the original ...

Re: Music

Jefferson Airplane Volunteers, my fave american band. This is really their only studio album I like. Live and on rehearsal tapes, they ruled.

Waiting with my typical stoic patience for Angantyr Svig to leak.(Or go on sale, but in the USA that will likely take some years.)

Re: Music

New Keep Of Kalessin, Reptilian leak, a follow-up to their previous, Kolossus.
Slick, well-done.
Good vox, driving riffing, percussion; silly lyrics.
I mean, dragons, really. What next, cuddly werewolves or safe, sexy vampires? 8)

Re: Last Film You Watched

On TCM: Ran , Akira Kuroswa , part muscular adaptation of Lear , though according to the director this was not his original intent. Fabulous set and art design; ditto sound design and score. Excellent all around;deeply nihilistic( as in 'pessimistic'); Includes some bardo and ashura references. He s...

Re: Last Book You Read

Currently making my way through Völsungasaga, ( with the help of several glossaries and a couple of translations.) Swell, fairy-tale stuff. Better to adapt this than Tolkien, imo.

Re: Last Book You Read

With all the 'tree ring circus' about global warming, this would seem a logical time to film J. G. Ballard The Drowned World . As to his early prose style, maybe a 'surgeon wearing boxing gloves' would be an apt description. I noted Crash on the bookshelf of teen Ian Curtis in Control , along with N...

Re: Last Film You Watched

Yep to Manhattan , good all around and also the first film where I realized that Allen had such short-eyes.  OT: Battlefield Earth on telly. Unlike almost everyone else, I like it. The great feel of genuine old super-science pulp has rarely been so well captured in a big budget film. O...

Re: My take on INLAND EMPIRE

LOL, no, your english is okay; I think the question is ' Are the characters speaking in English in that scene?"
I dunno if they are. I'll certainly check it out tonight.

Re: Music

New Burzum leaked today. ( Maybe in a few months I'll be able to actually purchase a CD.) Good stuff. His joy at finally being able to sit with that solitary candle burning and riff away is obvious.

Re: Last Film You Watched

We saw The Wolfman last night.
A good, earnest, somewhat underwritten re-make, nothing great or anything, but with little camp, thankfully. The CGI sets ( and set design/art direction in general) were the best thing in the flic.
Benicio del Toro's performance was quite wooden, alas.

Re: Last Book You Read

I made an exception to my 'no translations' rule and read ( in translation from Spanish) Adolpho Bioy Casares The Invention Of Morel. This is on the Lost reading List, not really a novel so much as a long story. Its influence is sometimes cited on the film Last Year In Marienbad , but I can not real...

Re: Does IE have a connection to THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR???

Nah, not much to do with IE . The story of which The 13th Floor ( which I liked somewhat) reminded me a bit was Robert A. Heinlein The Unpleasant Profession Of Jonathon Hoag. 'critics' that 'edit' 'realities' which are 'art works' to higher beings. This old pulp novella creeped me out to the max whe...
