Twin Peaks and David Lynch on DVD FAQ June 1st, 2008 11:11pm

Starting with th most frequently asked question that I get in my email box...When is a version of Twin Peaks: FWWM going to be released with Deleted Scenes on DVD?

From what I can tell, unless the company that owns the scenes, MK2 can work a deal out with Lynch, we will probably never see this come to light. MK2 came extremely close to making a deal for a 2 Disc DVD release with Deleted Scenes in 2007, however due to additional legal hurdles, the project has been put on hold. If a deal is ever made, we can expect Warner Bros. to pick up the Deleted Scenes here in the States. This is only if a deal can be made.

I remember back in 2000, New Line had announced at the VSDA a Platinum Edition of FWWM with 55 minutes of Deleted Scenes hand picked by David Lynch. What happened to that, and what is the REAL story?

In conjunction with New Line Home Video, David Lynch had selected specific Deleted Scenes to be included on the New Lines FWWM DVD in the form of a supplement at the end of the disc.

However...

At literally the last minute, New Line dropped the ball and decided NOT to include Deleted Scenes.

New Line claimed that they did all they could. They even tried to work out a deal with MK2 to share the restoration costs of the Deleted Scenes. In the end, (according to New Line), MK2 was not responsive and New Line didn't want the DVD release sitting on the shelf. Lynch however, has stated in his chatroom on many occasions that New Line simply did not want to pay what it cost to do it right. The problem is that the Lynch would love to release the scenes, however, he wants to do them right. This includes full hi-def transfers, editing, and sound mixing. This will cost a whole lot of money. When New Line decided to put the DVD out without the Deleted Scenes, the fans were outraged and started creating petitions. There was even an initiative to send cans of creamed corn to New Line. As the story goes, the cans of creamed corn were sent to New Line shortly aftr 9/11 and the big anthrax mail scare. One of the cans of corn had broken open during the shipping and when it arrived oozing at the seams at New Line, they had to quarantine the mail room. It has been said that Lynch was very disappointed with New Line's decision and since the New Line fiasco, Lynch has been put off on the whole project. For the time being, Lynch has gone to spend time working on other projects. To add insult to injury, a year or two after releasing the DVD, MK2 finally stepped up and started showing interest in releasing the Deleted Scenes on their own, however, New Line was no longer interested as they had already released their DVD. In my opinion, it would make sense for Lynch to cut a deal with MK2 to share costs of editing the scenes in exchange for allowing Lynch to have exclusive rights to show the scenes on his website! Unfortunately, due to the high cost to complete these scenes, even Lynch thinks it would be more trouble than its worth.

If you are interested in being able to see these Deleted Scenes, then let MK2 know today. Showing your support will hopefully convince them that funding the scenes will be a worthwhile expense. You can send them an email at: and show your support... even if you don't live in France, as other territories will be getting a new Special Edition released with Deleted Scenes if MK2 produces them.

Any hopes of Lynch ever releasing an extended cut of FWWM instead of Deleted Scenes separate from the film?

Hopefully this will clear up all of the confusion. It appears that Lynch at one point wanted to do just that. Below is a few paragraphs for the fine book "Lynch on Lynch" by Chris Rodley page 185:

CHRIS RODLEY:
In part, adverse press and audience reaction to the movie was to do with the fact that much of the humour of the TV series - the coffee, the doughnuts, etc. - had been dropped. All the niceties, and some of the characters, were gone. All that was left was this desperate...

DAVID LYNCH:
Torment. Yes, that's true. But again I had a limit on the running time of the picture. We shot many scenes that - for a regular feature - were too tangential to keep the main story progressing properly. We thought it might be good sometime to do a longer version with these other things in, because a lot of the characters that are missing in the finished movie had been filmed. They're part of the picture, they're just not necessary for the main story.

In 2000, Lynch had completely changed his mind and told New Line that he would only edit the Deleted Scenes as a bonus for the DVD and not to be integrated back into the theatrical film. Keep in mind that there was never a fully edited extended cut of the film. It was only the rough footage that was about 5 1/2 hours long.
