Deleted Scenes and an Alternate Ending for the Dune Ultimate Edition US DVD?

I picked up on an article that was posted up last month on Davis DVD that mentioned the following:

Extras will include deleted scenes with an introduction by producer Raffaella De Laurentiis, behind-the-scenes photographs, original artwork, “Designing Dune,” “Special Effects,” “Models & Miniatures” and “Wardrobe Design” featurettes. Now here’s the cool part we just learned: the deleted scenes will include never-before-seen footage including fight scenes and an alternate ending to the film!

Sounds too good to be true. Click to pre-order the Dune Ultimate Edition DVD from Amazon.com

Eraserhead and the Short Films Get Wide US Release

On January 10th, 2006, you will be able to buy both Eraserhead and the Short Films on DVD from your local retailer. These are the exact same discs that have been sold exclusively on DavidLynch.com, sans the 8×8 collectors box and collectors booklet. You can pre-order them at Amazon.com by clicking below and save on shipping costs.

Lost Highway Ultimate DVD Region 2 from MK2

Well, I have yet to get a chance to watch this all the way through, but I have to say it is by far the best presentation of Lost Highway to date. The colors are rich and the sound transfer is just awesome. There was a new interview with Lynch where he actually speaks about the film! Other cool extras were some raw behind the scenes footage, some which was featured on the Pretty as a Picture documentary and others which were not. I’ll post more when I get a chance to enjoy the film, with my luck won’t be until after the New Year. While you can’t buy it at most US DVD outlets, here are a few places overseas that you can:

MK2 Botique (English Version), FNAC, or Amazon France. You might have to run the sites through a language converter. I use Google, which seem to do the trick.

Chrysta Bell in INLAND EMPIRE

I went to the Mass Ensemble show the other night and was completely blown away. If they play in your area, be sure to check them out. During the intermission one fan asked Chrysta about working with Lynch after which she revealed that she would be featured in his new film, INLAND EMPIRE. I also got to hear a new song written by Lynch and Bell that was very melodic and soothing. Can’t wait for the CD to come out.

December 1,2,3,4 and 7,8,9,10,11, MASS will erect a geodesic dome on the Santa Monica Pier and transform it into a giant instrument! The music and light show will be rapturous. This will be an unforgettable event. The show will feature the public debut of music written by Chrysta Bell and David Lynch.
New Fire Walk With Me Deleted Scenes Petition Online

John Sullmeyer, creator of the original Twin Peaks Season 2 on DVD Petition asked me to post a link to his new online Worldwide Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me Deleted Scenes on DVD Petition. According to John, he has gotten word that MK2 and Lynch are still in talks to work out a deal to do the scenes on an upcoming DVD release. One good point about the petition is that it requests that MK2 and New Line work together to share costs of the project.

Lynch Mentions Twin Peaks Season 2 Delays at Ann Arbor Lecture

Last night at one of the Consciousness, Creativity and Transcendental Meditation lectures in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a fan asked about the status of Twin Peaks Season Two. Lynch responded that he’d been planning on doing the 5.1 mix of the Twin Peaks Season Two DVD in his home studio, but then things stalled and he never got the go-ahead. He’s still waiting for the go-ahead.

Twin Peaks Season 2 Soundtrack CD in the Works?

Tonight I was lucky enough to be in the chat room of David Lynch.com when David Lynch popped in. Below is one of my questions and answer that I got:

dugpa__ [11:10 PM PST]: I read on a message board a few months back that Angelo said he was working on getting some of the Twin Peaks Season 2 music out. Is there any truth to what I read?
DAVIDLYNCH [11:11 PM PST]: PERHAPS DUG – YES

It would be a great idea and marketing tie in to release this along with the 2006 Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD set. It makes perfect sense to me. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Now if only we could get the Deleted Scenes to FWWM released.

Filming is expected to last 7 to 9 days. The film will be co-produced by Tumult Foundation, the founder of Camerimage. “INLAND EMPIRE” is based on a short story which David directed during Camerimage with Krzysztof Majchrzak and Karolina Gruszka called “The Green Room in Lodz”.

MK2 Lost Highway Release Later this Year

The following image was posted as the first released poster for David Lynch’s latest film, Inland Empire. This poster appeared in a post up at IMDB.com which originally appeared in the Cannes Edition of Variety magazine. Inland Empire is still filming and is slated for a 2006 release.

Universal Releases New Ultimate Dune DVD in France

Although the US release date is currently up in the air, France received what looks to be the new Ultimate Dune 3 Disc DVD from Universal. Most notably are a few changes from the original US release specs including no actual Deleted Scenes (only photos) and only a 4:3 transfer of the TV version. Good news for audiophiles is that the DTS track is back on this French DVD release (previously dropped on the US release at the last minute). Whether or not the US DVD will be a direct port of the French release remains to be seen. One other thing I will note is that the transfer for this version looks just amazing.

New FWWM DVD out in the UK July 25th from Cinema Club

It seems that the UK will get a new version of FWWM. From early looks, it seems that Cinema Club has ported the MK2 DVD over including the transfer, menus, and all. While there are no Deleted Scenes included on this edition, the MK2 version is by far the best as far as picture and sound quality go. Click here to read more about this release.

Thanks to Dean Clapham for the info!

Sites to Watch – Angelo Badalamenti and Chrysta Bell

There are some new photos up over at Chrysta Bell.com in Gallery 4 of a Video Shoot with David Lynch. Could these possibly be from a scene in Inland Empire? Only time will tell. Click on the photo below to navigate through the site.

And now here’s one I have been waiting a loooong time for. It seems that Angelo Badalamenti will be going live with his new website sometime in the coming future. No word on when. Now maybe we can finally bug him to get the unreleased music for the Second Season of Twin Peaks.

Inland Empire – New Lynch Film Announced

Today it was announced that David Lynch’s next film would be entitled “Inland Empire”. Justin Theroux, Jeremy Irons, Laura Dern, and Harry Dean Stanton are some among the cast members announced on Variety.com.

From Variety:

Titled “INLAND EMPIRE” (in capitals, though Lynch doesn’t explain why), it stars Laura Dern, along with Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton, Jeremy Irons and a host of others Lynch won’t specify.

In fact, there’s still very little the enigmatic Lynch is comfortable to reveal about the movie.

“It’s about a woman in trouble, and it’s a mystery, and that’s about all I want to say about it,” he comments diffidently.

Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD Delayed to Spring 2006

Today I have been given official word from Paramount that they will be pushing back the DVD release of Twin Peaks Season 2 on DVD to Spring 2006. The reason for the delay is to work with David Lynch to oversee the transfer of new masters. While it is another delay in such a long wait, at least it will be done right, which is by far the most important thing.

New Release Date for Dune SE DVD?

Yesterday I got lots of emails regarding the story on theDigitalBits.com concerning Lynch working on a new extended cut of Dune. A fan asked Lynch about this story and here is the response he gave:

SkAteAleX1 [7:37 PM PST]: David you have to give me some news on if the rumors are true about the Dune dvd ?

Official Word from Paramount International Regarding Twin Peaks Season 2 on DVD

Below is an email that was forwarded to me by John Sullmeyer, creator of the Twin Peaks Season 2 petition from the Vice President of Marketing for Paramount Home Video International:

We’re still pulling materials together, we have a lot of good interviews from the cast and Crew in the bag, but the biggest issue facing us now is resting on the masters, which are in a pretty poor state. We’re hoping to have Mr. Lynch oversee the creation of the new masters and also the creation of a new 5.1 soundtrack!

so all in all, it’s taken us longer than we hoped, but it’s getting there – we’re still planning to hold the Q4 release dates (if we can!).

So there you have it. Special thanks to John Sullmeyer for the great job on the Season 2 Petition which has over 20,000 signatures worldwide! It sounds like if all things come together, Twin Peaks fans will be in for a treat at the end of this year.

Actor Robert Blake Found Not Guilty = Good News for Lost Highway DVD

Yesterday, actor Robert Blake was found not guilty of the murder of Bonny Lee Bakley. Rumor in Hollywood was that Universal was holding back the Lost Highway DVD release until the murder trial blew over fearing bad press for releasing a gilm which depicts Blake in a unsavory role. My guess is that we will see the release this year right around the time of the Dune DVD, which will likely appear Q4 of this year.

Dune US DVD Release Delayed

According to an article over at DVDTimes, the Dune Special Edition DVD from Universal has been delayed. No reason was given nor a new release date. More details as they come.

More Details for the Dune Special Edition

Found the following specs over at the website DuneInfo.com:

Disc 1 – Side A

Original Theatrical Version (137 mins)

2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen

English DD5.1 Surround

French DD2.0 Stereo

English, French and Spanish subtitles

Deleted Scenes with Introduction by Raffaella De Laurentiis

Designing Dune

Special Effects

Models & Miniatures

Wardrobe Design

Photograph Gallery

Production Notes

Disc 1 – Side B

Extended Version (177 mins)

2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen

English DD5.1 Surround

English, French and Spanish subtitles

Note the dropping of the DTS track and the change in running time on the extended version. As you have probably guessed, David Lynch has had absolutely nothing to do with this release. Also, not sure how they are going to fit all that on one double sided disc. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
No Lost Highway DVD in March

I got word back from Universal that there are currently no plans to release Lost Highway on DVD at this time. The Netflix date looks to be the day they will be carrying the Canadian DVD for rental. Word has it that Universal is waiting for the whole Robert Blake scandal to blow over before they release the DVD fearing bad press. Go figure. So if you want the widescreen version anytime soon, this is just another good reason to go out and get a region free DVD player. More news as it comes.

The DVD set will include both the Theatrical and Extended TV Version of the film. Now hopefully Universal will finally get Lost Highway out on DVD. More details as they become available.

Article on Twin Peaks Season 2 on TVShowsOnDVD.com

There is an article up on TVShowsOnDVD.com regarding the upcoming Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD set from Paramount that further points to a possible US release late this year. I can confirm that they are definitely working on the DVD extras as you read this. However take my word on this one, no new transfers for this release.

Lynch Mentions Deleted Scenes in French Interview

On the French website, Telerama.fr, Lynch makes a specific mention to the Deleted Scenes Petition. Below is a rough translation:

David Lynch : I would do this for sentimental reasons. My friend, Jack Nance appeared in one of those deleted scenes. He’s dead now and it would be a great tribute to him.

Thanks to David Hendrain and Herve Lextrait for the article.

Dune to be the First Lynch Title on the new HD-DVD Format

Universal recently announced that Dune would be one of the first catalog releases on HD-DVD starting 4th Quarter 2005. Mulholland Drive should follow closely behind, as it has already been released on D-VHS. Hopefully Lost Highway is not too far behind.

Wild at Heart DVD Mini Review

Well, I finally got myself a copy of MGM’s Wild at Heart DVD. After watching it, I have to say that I am extremely pleased about this release. Both audio and video transfer are better than the film has ever looked or sounded. The documentaries are tastefully done and offer insightful stories and details on the film. The photo montage is great and has some really nice photos from the film that really stand out. My only gripe with this release is the lack of Deleted Scenes, especially after watching the documentary and hearing them described. Hopefully when this gets released on HD-DVD in a few years, we can finally get to see them. All in all, it is a great disc, and a must buy for any David Lynch Fan. It also makes a great stocking stuffer for the Holidays.

MK2 Region 2 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD Mini Review

Although it should have been much more than a bare bones DVD, the new FWWM DVD from MK2 does have quite a bit more than the New Line DVD to offer. First, the packaging is awesome. It comes in a limited edition foil that is “marked” by the FBI. The actual disc packaging is a nice cardboard foldout that features a map to owl cave. The back cover has a neat photo from the film of Cooper looking at the camera. The disc also includes a limited edition film cel, a 40 page book in French.

As for the audio and video quality, the audio sounds great. Both DD & DTS tracks match the original theatrical mix almost exactly. As for the video quality, it is good, but a bit too compressed at times. I think New Line did a better job with the compression, especially in the darker scenes. All in all, it is a great disc. Of course, it does NOT have the Deleted Scenes, but have faith, as MK2 are working on striking a deal with Lynch to do a 2 DVD version next year that will hopefully include at least one Deleted Scene. This is a must have for all Lynch fans that have a Region Free DVD player. The archive interviews are also a nice bonus and do not have the horrible editing that the New Line DVD suffered from. My only complaint (yes, other than the lack of Deleted Scenes) is that the interviews are not longer.

First Review of the MK2 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD Region 2

See the first review in French of the new DVD by clicking below. Apparently the final specs on the DVD are as follows:

40 Page Booklet

Original Film Cel

DVD Limited to 20,000 Copies

5.1 English DD & DTS

5.1 French DD

20 Minute Clip of Interviews that seem to be from an Archive (Thank you MK2 !)

Click here to read the review

The most interesting fact is that according to the person that sent me the review, the sound in the Pink Room scene now matches the theatrical version, which leads me to believe that New Line had tinkered with the audio mix submitted by Lynch and Neff. I should have a copy of my own in the next few weeks and will verify this as well.

Twin Peaks Season 2 Article Posted at Lynchnet – Worldwide Release?!!

Mike Dunn over at Lynchnet.com has posted an interesting article on the release of Twin Peaks Season 2, citing that the delay may be attributed to Paramount waiting to do a worldwide release (US Included) of Season 2 when the rights revert back to Paramount in September 2005. This is good news for US and somewhat more of a delay to the rest of the world that were told that Season 2 would be released Q2 2005. It still may, come out in Q2, but it would make sense for them to try and time them to avoid loss of sales to those importing the DVD from overseas. One other bit of news it that I have yet to confirm that Paramount will be using the original negatives to do the transfer for Season 2. This would be quite a shame if they didn’t match the Season 1 transfer quality after this incredibly long wait for the fans.

MK2 Still In Talks With Lynch for a 2005 FWWM Collectors DVD Release

It seems that as before, MK2 has been getting lots of support from the fans to release FWWM on DVD with Deleted Scenes. I have gotten word back from MK2 that they are in fact trying to meet with Lynch once more in hopes to come to an agreement, and will be pushing their 2 Disc Collectors DVD of FWWM back to 2005. They will in fact still be releasing a single disc version in December of the film with a 5.1 English and French audio mix. In speaking with MK2, they sounded optimistic to explore every possibility. You may continue to send letters of support to: editions@mk2.com.

No Deleted Scenes on December 8th from MK2

Today I was contacted by the Marketing Manager of MK2. Below is a press release she put together specifically about the inclusion of Deleted Scenes for their December 2004 DVD release:

PRESS RELEASE

TWIN PEAKS, FIRE WALK WITH ME
ON DVD DECEMBER 8TH MK2 EDITIONS

Since May 2002, fans from all over the world have been asking us to edit the original cut scenes from “Twin Peaks – Fire Walk With Me.”

As early as 2002, New Line, the American editor of the DVD, had tried to include these cut excerpts into its edition, but had been forced to give up for financial reasons.

We have tried several times to contact David Lynch and his associates to find a technical and financial solution to the problem.

We had thus stopped exporting the film worldwide in 2002 and 2003, and had delayed the French editing of the DVD.

Despite a few sporadic contacts, mail without answers and missing appointment on David Lynch’s side has made us take the decision not to deprive the French audience anymore from this major film that is also an important work in David Lynch’s filmography.

The DVD, to be released on December 8th 2004 in France, will thus be edited with as much care as any of the other MK2 products, but these cut scenes will unfortunately be missing.

We still hope – as all David Lynch fans worldwide do – to have these cut scenes included in a future version of the DVD, but this responsibility and willingness has to be shared by David Lynch himself.

MK2 Editions

Wild at Heart Special Edition DVD Release Slated for a December 7th Release

According to a post today in the Digital Bits Rumormill, Wild at Heart is set to release on December 7th. The video transfer has been re-color timed and approved by Lynch. Rumor has it that Lynch was very involved with this release. Extras to include interviews with cast and crew, as well as a stills gallery and more. I have also confirmed that there will be no Deleted Scenes with this release, as Lynch did not want them to be released.

Special Thanks to Adam Santangelo for the heads up.

August 22nd 2004

Twin Peaks Season 2 International Release Q2 2005

Word has it that the world outside of US and Canada will be seeing Twin Peaks: Season 2 on DVD in Q3 2005. Lets hope that those transfers are as good as the Season 1 set.

Wild at Heart Special Edition

Well, no recent update on the Wild at Heart Special Edition DVD, however, if all goes as planned, we should hear an announcement in the next month or so if it truly is going to be released this December. Below is a shot of the proposed artwork for the French Special Edition.

MK2 Releases Specs for their Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD… No Deleted Scenes

Today I was alerted to what seems to be the specs for the upcoming MK2 FWWM DVD. According to the specs over at DVDFR.com, MK2 will be releasing 2 versions of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me on DVD on December 8th, 2004 cited as an “Edition Collector” as well as an “Edition Prestige”.

Both releases will be identical and carry the following Specs:

Disc 1 – Original Theatrical Version

Disc 2 – “Bonus”

In the specs, there were absolutely no mention of Deleted Scenes.

August 3rd 2004

News Back from MK2 on the DVD-NET.fr Article from May 1st

It’s been nearly three months since I wrote MK2 regarding an article published by DVD-NET.fr regarding Deleted Scenes on the upcoming French MK2 FWWM DVD. Here is what they finally had to say:

I’m sorry to tell you that the DVD NET.fr announcement is a mistake. At the moment we are still waiting for an answer from David Lynch in order to include the deleted scenes on the DVD; we don’t know how, neither why the DVD website has released the statement about the deleted scenes. However, we are working on bonus features, but we can’t divulge anything for the moment.

With December 2004 just months away, it seems that unless work were to start now on the Deleted Scenes, there is no way it will make it for this release. Take into account that it will take roughly 2 months to finish and transfer the scenes, and about 2 months for the discs to be at the replication plant, and that would put us right into December.

Wild at Heart Extras Wrapped Up

I have been told that the extras for the US Wild at Heart DVD have been completed. Tentative release date is December 2004. Recent talks of MGM getting acquired by either Warner or Sony could drop this release into limbo. (Remember that Lost Highway DVD that was supposed to be out by now) We will have to wait and see. Thankfully Sony and Warner are a little better about their catalog titles.

Updates and Stuff

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. As always, I have been working like a dog. I did however, manage to get myself married and take a quick honeymoon over at the Salish. Hopefully news will start pouring in towards the later half of September.

June 28th 2004

Possible Dune SE in the Works from Universal

Today theDigitalBits.com reported in their rumormill that Universal is in the works of putting together a Dune Special Edition. No confirmation so far. Too bad we still haven’t heard anything on their Lost Highway DVD that was supposedly going to be released this year.

Thanks to St. Mark for the heads up.

Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD International Release Pushed Back to 2005

I’ve received word from Paramount International that the International release (non US) of Twin Peaks: Season 2 on DVD has been pushed back to 2005. No word as to why yet another delay. More details as they come.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD Mention on DVDRAMA.com

I looks like French DVD site DVDRAMA.com has a blurb on the upcoming MK2 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD. Listing it as a December 2004 release, the loose English Translation is as follows:

An edition filled with “surprises.”

So far, no indication of any Deleted Scenes, and sad news is that word back from contacts close to Lynch indicate that it does not look so good. All we can do is keep sending those letters. Click below for the original article.

Readers Confirm with MK2 that Deleted Scenes are Not Going to Happen

Upon reading my last article, a few readers have contacted MK2 to get confirmation on the Deleted Scenes. It would seem that MK2 is contradicting the article at DVDNET-FR.com. Over the last day, DVDNET-FR has even changed their article to “Unconfirmed”. The only thing that is certain is that MK2 will release the DVD in December 2004. I implore you all to keep sending those emails of support to editions@mk2.com.

DVDNET-FR.com Reports MK2 to Release Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me w/ Deleted Scenes Region 2!!??!

Reported by the famous French DVD website DVDNET-FR.com, MK2 plans on releasing Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me on DVD this December. What is of particular interest to fans worldwide is that the article mentions that MK2 claim they will be releasing Deleted Scenes with this release. IF this happens, you can guarantee that New Line will be right behind this with a US re-release.

Anyone living in France, I urge you to contact MK2 and let me know what they say on this matter.

Also, remember that you can still send letters of support to MK2 letting them know that hey need to seal this deal. Check out the FWWM Fight for Deleted Scenes Official Website:

Digital Bits Rumor Mill Reports Wild at Heart in December

It looks like the Digital Bits has picked up on our story about the upcoming Wild at Heart DVD. They did a follow-up with their contacts at MGM and it looks like the plan is to release the Wild at Heart DVD in December. Also to note that for those of you that haven’t yet picked up the MGM Blue Velvet Special Edition, MGM will be issuing a price cut for this DVD in December as well.

Small bit of Lynch Trivia: Did you know that David Lynch turned down an offer from George Lucas to Direct Star Wars: Return of the Jedi to direct Dune instead? One can’t help but wonder what his version would have been like.

Every Week, Once A Week, Give Yourself a Gift – Twin Peaks Worldwide Episode Viewing and Discussion

The good folks over at the Twin Peaks Gazette have a great idea for a coordinated weekly Twin Peaks episode viewing and discussion forum. Each week, members will watch an episode of the series (in order) starting with the original broadcast pilot and then going week to week. Starting March 22nd, each Monday morning, a new discussion thread will be created with the name of the episode as the subject. The idea is that everyone will be on the same page and able to discuss the Episodes together in the Twin Peaks Theater Forum. If you want to participate, you have from now until March 22nd to watch the Pilot.

Below is a partial schedule:

March 22: Pilot

March 29: Episode 1

April 5: Episode 2

April 12: Episode 3

April 19: Episode 4

April 26: Episode 5

May 3: Episode 6

May 10: Episode 7

May 17: Episode 8

Lynch/Neff Potential Future Project with Chrysta Bell

David Lynch and John Neff have recently finished writing and recording two new songs with female Austin, TX based song artist Chrysta Bell. On Chrystas website, she describes her work with the duo as “haunting and mysterious, lush and passionate”. There is an amazing clip of Chrysta with Dutch Rall on the Dutch Rall Official Website site that is simply breathtaking. I really hope these songs get a proper release.

Wild at Heart US DVD Status

David is finishing the color timing of the new transfer. The soundtrack will most likely be the original LCRS mix. It seems that Lynch is no longer interested in doing any more 5.1 mixes of his older films. One thing however is that other than a great transfer, unlike MGM’s Blue Velvet Special Edition DVD, this DVD will have no extras or documentaries.

Twin Peaks Season 2 International DVD from Paramount

Unconfirmed Rumors of International Season 2 Release

Keep in mind that the following has not been confirmed, but since I have received more than a few emails on this, I am going ahead and posting it. Unconfirmed information has been released that Paramount International plans on releasing 3 different sets of Twin Peaks Season 2.

Lynchnet Reports on Season 2 US Release… And It Doesn’t Look Good

Finally, it looks like Mike Dunn from Lynchnet may have got the story of the year on what looks to be the final word on the whole US Twin Peaks: Season 2 on DVD deal. To read more click here.

New Article up at TVShowsonDVD.com

There is a new article up at TVShowsonDVD.com that talks about the backlash they have gotten after posting update to Twin Peaks Season 2 on DVD. I would like to comment on their article and remind the fans that they are on our side. Like myself, they are only reporting the news as they hear it. In any case, it looks like 2004 will be the earliest that we will hear of a US Season 2 release, but if I hear anything new, as always, I will post it.

Meanwhile, the latest report is that Season 2 will hit Australia first in September 2004. Click here to read the article.

TVShowsOnDVD.com Reports Season 1 Sales Not Profitable Enough to Cover Production Costs

In a very surprising twist, it looks as though Artisan is now saying that Season 1 did not sell enough copies to cover costs. Not sure what to make of this. Sad news indeed. Hopefully Paramount Germany will keep good on their promise to release Season 2 in November 2004. US fans, get ready to buy a Region Free DVD Players.

This just doesn’t sit right with me. In the January 24th 2002 issue of the Chicago Tribune, President of Artisan Home Entertainment was quoted:

The studios generally won’t release sales figures for TV-based DVDs. But Steven Beeks, president of Artisan Home Entertainment, said he thinks other studios are experiencing DVD successes similar to the one he had with the first season of “Twin Peaks,” the moody David Lynch drama about solving a murder in a quirky town. In the three years that it has been distributing videos of “Twin Peaks” episodes, Artisan has sold between 30,000 and 40,000. Inc ontrast, Beeks said, in the few weeks since the series’ first-season boxed set has been out on DVD, Artisan has sold about 150,000.

I even remember that demand was so high on Season 1 pre-orders, that it was delayed a week just so Artisan would be able to produce more units Something seems very fishy about this whole thing.

In any case, Artisan is now owned by Lions Gate, and if you would like to let Lions Gate know that there is demand for Season 2 of Twin Peaks on DVD, you can send an email here:

Artisan Acquired by Lions Gate Films

Announced on Friday, Lions Gate Entertainment said it will buy Artisan Entertainment for $160 million in cash, and assume about $60 million in debt. What does this mean for the US release of Twin Peaks Season 2… we’ll have to wait and see. I have an inquiry out to Lions Gate and will post if I hear anything new.

Seattle Times Reports that Artisan No Longer Has the Rights to Release Season Two in the US

Now I knew they were having some legal difficulties in releasing Season Two, but this is just total bullsh*t. Here is the quote from the Seattle Times Online July 1st 2003:

“Twin Peaks” season two. Don’t hold your breath. Artisan, which did what Agent Cooper would have called a damn good job on the first season of Lynch’s series, no longer has the rights — and they don’t know who does now.

Check out the link here:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/artsentertainment/135133772_dvd01.html

I’m working on confirming this with Artisan. I am also in the works to contact Paramount to see how their Region 2 release of Season Two is going. I fear that many fans will be buying Region Free DVD players this year.

Korean Wild at Heart DVD is Region 0 NTSC!!!

Well this came as a shock to say the least. I decided to pick up a copy of the UK Wild at Heart DVD… or so I thought from a vendor on Ebay. When the disc arrived, the disc looked exactly like the UK disc cover that I had sen online, however, it had Korean lettering on it. I popped it into my DVD Rom Drive thinking I would have to switch the Region Code first, but instead, it did not prompt me to switch the Region Code. I pulled the disc out, and threw it into my regular DVD player, and was amazed that the disc was both Region 0 and NTSC. What that means for you Americans is that you can purchase this disc off of Ebay or any other Korean DVD reseller, and play it in your regular DVD player. I picked it up for $10.50, however I’ve seen it going for around $27. If you grab it, make sure it’s the Korean version.

Keep in mind that MGM will be putting out a Lynch approved version later this year… but… if you want something in OAR (Original Aspect Ratio), and you want it now, it’s better than VHS.

Wild at Heart UK region 2 Pulled off the Shelves

Word has it that Universal UK decided to pull their Wild at Heart DVD off the shelves at the last minute. I have been told that they were not too happy with the transfer they released and are planning on repressing a and releasing a new transfer in July. Apparently a few copies made it on the street just before they were pulled, so if you got a copy, it is a collectors item. More news as it breaks. No word if they will be using Lynch’s approved transfer this time around, or if the new pressing will include any extras.

No real news this last month. Wild at Heart came out on DVD in the UK. Anyone that picked up a copy, let me know what you think. Also, more confirmations that Europe will not be getting Season 2 of Twin Peaks on DVD until October at the earliest. If I hear otherwise, I’ll be sure to post it.

Region 2 UK Wild at Heart DVD Review

There is a review of the Region 2 Wild at Heart DVD. Early reports mentioned that the transfer was misframed, however, looking at the screenshots, it looks like they got the aspect ratio correct. Still can’t vouch for the framing of the picture. Laserdisc fans remember the framing job they did on the Image FWWM US Laserdisc.
A Second Confirmation… No Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD for the US in 2003

Today I heard back from my contact at Artisan. His exact words were “Twin Peaks Season 2 has been postponed… maybe in 2004.” I’ll see if I can get any more details, but so far it looks pretty grim. I’ll soon be posting info regarding Region Free DVD players in the coming months. <sigh>

No Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD for the US in 2003…

It’s starting to look that way. While I have heard many rumors over the last year, TVSHOWSONDVD.com went straight to the source and reported today that according to Artisan, Twin Peaks Season Two on DVD is not likely for a 2003 release. I have some inquiries into my contacts at Artisan and will report if there is any additional information. All signs so far point to legal issues holding up this release.

As for me, I think I will be picking up the Region 3 DVD set when it gets released by Paramount, as I am sick of waiting for Artisan to get this sorted out. Region 2 and Region 3 Twin Peaks: Season 2 box sets should be out this Fall. Everywhere but the US. Figures. But hey, you can always pick up a copy of Artisans third re-release of Terminator 2. A true day of garmonbozia.

Chat With Lynch on FWWM Deleted Scenes, Wild at Heart on DVD, and the Thought Gang

For the last few months, there has been no news on the negotiations between Lynch and MK2 on the fate of the Deleted Scenes to Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Yesterday, I was in the chat room of David Lynch.com, and the man himself was able to answer a few of my burning questions:

dugpa_ [5:29 PM PST]: David, did you guys finish mixing the Thought Gang CD ?
DAVIDLYNCH [5:30 PM PST]: DUG – IT’S SORT OF ON HOLD — ANGELO AND I NEED TO CUT SOME NEW TRACKS

dugpa_ [5:36 PM PST]: David, are you guys doing a new audio remix for the upcoming Wild at Heart DVD that MGM is putting out in October?
DAVIDLYNCH [5:37 PM PST]: YES I THINK WE WILL DO A 5.1 REDO
dugpa_ [5:39 PM PST]: One last DVD related question David. Any news on MK2 paying to do those Deleted Scenes for their French Fire Walk With Me DVD?
DAVIDLYNCH [5:39 PM PST]: DUG – THEY ARE THINKING OF A WAY – IT MIGHT WORK

I had almost given hope of ever seeing those scenes. It’s good to see they are still in talks. With That in mind, maybe it’s time to start those emails to mk2 back up again. Here’s the link to where to send the emails and all that other jazz.

Specs on Twin Peaks Season 2 Region 2 DVD

Everything has been real quiet on the Lynch DVD front. I was hoping to get some information on the Region 2 German Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD set, but so far, I’ve heard nothing other than a late May release date. As far as a US release, my gut instincts tell me we will hear something in the coming months. Artisan is keeping very tight lipped about the release and all they have said is that it is still “in talks”.

Twin Peaks Season 2 on DVD in Germany May 2003

It looks as if Germany will be getting the first half of Twin Peaks Season 2 on DVD in May of 2003. David Lynch.de reported this and Primus Media seems to be taking pre-orders with a May 23rd 2003 release date. At this point you may be asking when will the box set be announced for release in the US? The only thing we know for certain is that all 29 episodes minus the Pilot were each given 5.1 audio remixes at Mi Casa studios, so there is definately intent to release Season 2 on DVD. As for the hi-def video transfers, we are not sure if all the Episodes were transferred at that time as well, but we do know that Artisan did have all the negatives pulled for the entire Series from the vaults to do the hi-def transfers from. Below is a picture of where the audio remix was performed a few years back:

The Marlon Brando of DVD

Heres a more complete translation of an excerpt from the Lynch Interview in issues 27 of French DVD magazine, DVD Vision:

David Lynch: There are never too many scenes. When writing, when shooting, when editing, at each creative step, we add and we take away. Ideas are born, others die or are abandoned because they do not fit anymore with the whole. It is like a sculptor: he must take a piece from the stone to reveal the core of his figure…

DVD Vision: So you say no to cut scenes? At MK2, we are being assured they are trying to convince you to release cut scenes of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

David Lynch: It must be worth it. We are not going to do what all these other DVDs do with rough cuts from AVID, not calibrated, barely edited, with mag sound. What for? … I mean, they must be of quality…picture, sound… I am interested if we go back to the lab, take the negatives, re-edit the scenes so that they have a minimum of coherence, do a music, a soundtrack, mix, redo a calibrated master shot by shot to obtain a pristine copy. That’s a lot of work. If I am given the means to do it, I would not mind them to be shown outside the movie, since it is the way I would have worked on them.

DVD Vision: In fact, it is a matter of money?

David Lynch: Of money and time. Doing that also means not doing anything else.

DVD Vision: That’s a bit the Brando syndrom in the 80s: “Yes, yes I would be happy to perform five minutes in your movie, but I want to be top of the bill and 15 millions dollars for two days of shooting.” An elegant way to say no.

David Lynch: Yes, I am the Marlon Brando of DVD. I work toward the future. I am payed for that. If they want me to go back in the past… that is what these scenes represent for me… I have not been payed to do so. The Deleted Scenes I really wanted to show were for the Blue Velvet DVD, which I did not manage to find.

Lynch also goes on to state that he will never do commentaries on his films, not now or in the future. Looks like we may have to send more emails to MK2 to try and get them to raise the cash to do the job right.

Special thanks again to Bertrand Besse for the great scoop.

Twin Peaks DVDs Overseas

It looks like the rest of the world is catching up on getting Twin Peaks on DVD. Korea will be getting the same box that Germany recently got. In other news, Spain has just received a complete Twin Peaks DVD box set from Manga films. Early reports indicate that the Manga films Twin Peaks box set has packed the Pilot plus Seasons 1 and 2 all in a single 8-disc set, plus new packaging and a few extras different from the Season One set. The Spanish set is only 2.0 Stereo and the video quality is only slightly better than VHS, as they did not use the Artisan/Paramount hi-def transfers.

Thanks to Jeanha Bae, Bertrand Besse, and Jani Virtanen for the great news.

Seven failed compression attempts, and a completely new HD transfer later, I’ve got it on good word that the Eraserhead DVD is planned to ship in 2 weeks. Check the online store in the coming days for the announcement.
Korean Mulholland Drive DVD

I have heard that some people have been having trouble with getting their Korean Mulholland Drive DVDs from hkdvd.com. Mine came in just fine from them, but if you are looking for a US based retailer as an alternative, check out Scarecrow Video by clicking here. They have the DVD in stock right now along with VHS copies of the Jack Nance Documentary, “I Don’t Know Jack”. The DVD for “I Don’t Know Jack” will be available through Amazon.com as wel as David Lynch.com in the next month or so.

Membership has it’s Privileges

It seems that David Lynch has extended an offer to get David Lynch.com members backstage passes to the Blue Bob Concert in Paris on November 11th to meet the band in person. The offer has passed, but I think it was a wonderful gesture on David’s part.

More Updates on the Twin Peaks Pilot

Apparently there is someone at Paramount responding to Twin Peaks fans saying that they do not own the rights o the Twin Peaks Pilot. Furthermore, they are trying to say that New Line does. I recently received word from two sources at New Line saying that they absolutely have NO rights to the Twin Peaks Pilot. Their legal department checked to confirm this. I have a feeling that the rights to the Pilot in the US are caught up in a legal mess and no one has been putting any effort to get this thing sorted out. So there you have it. No one claims to have the rights to it.

Change in Direction

Well all, it looks like I’m going to help lead a very big project at work that will last till November of 2003. With the craziness of work, my writing, and going back to school part time, updates on the site will be less often. I will turn the focus on reporting strictly Lynch DVD and music news as I get it. But before that, here is some catching up.

Eraserhead DVD Update

Lynch has made a mention in his chatroom:

DAVIDLYNCH [7:09 PM PST]: GOOD NEWS ON ERASERHEAD …. I THINK WE HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEMS – IT IS AT LEAST GOING TO BE SPARKLING CLEAN AND I THINK WILL BE GOOD — IT’S STILL A MONTH OR MORE AWAY BUT BETTER THAN STARTING OVER

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Rumors and Facts Regarding the German Region 2 Twin Peaks Season 1 DVD Set

While rumor has it that Paramount acquired the same hi-def masters that were used in the US Artisan DVD Season One Box Set to include in their Season 1 Region 2 DVD Set, a new rumor has surfaced that the Pilot was transferred from a German TV Beta master. What this means is that chances are it will look and sound much better than the poor quality Catalyst Logic Pilot DVD, but it will not be the high “almost reference” quality that the Artisan DVDs have exhibited. I’ve decided to hold off on getting a set unless someone at Paramount Germany wants to send me a review copy.. hint hint.

In other news, I was informed that the German Region 2 DVD set will include subtitles in the following languages: German, English, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Danish, Greek, Netherlands, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish, and Czech. Amazon.de reports that this set will be available November 7th 2002.

I just have to say that I completely agree with Mike Dunn’s review on the new Korean Mulholland Drive DVD. It has some great extra material, and if you haven’t bought a copy already, go with the Korean DVD and get more bang for your buck.

Twin Peaks Festival Notes

Well, I’m back from the Fest. Julee Cruise was awesome, as was John Neff. Gary Bullock showed a few rare stills of Deleted Scenes from the Chet Desmond/Sheriff Cable fight scene that haven’t been seen ever. They will be available to buy as stills in a few weeks from the Twin Peaks Fest site.
Lynch DVDs Trapped in the Lodge

One of the most asked questions I get is when a particular title will be available on DVD. Currently there is no news about any upcoming US DVD releases. One thing I thought might help speed things up is setting up a page where fans can send emails to the Home Video departments of the various motion picture companies and DEMAND they release these films properly on DVD. Hell, it sure beats sitting around and waiting. Click here to check out the new page I put up. – Page Removed

Just found out that John Neff of Blue Bob will be on the stage with Rebekah Del Rio on Tuesday, August 13th.

Twin Peaks Season One and Fire Walk With Me to Be Released in Japan

Word has it that both the Twin Peaks Season One DVD set and Fire Walk With Me will be released in Japan before the end of the year. The Japanese Twin Peaks Season One DVD set WILL include the Pilot episode. Kind of feels like the US is the only country that will be going Pilot-less in the Season One DVD set.

Mulholland Drive Korean DVD Looks Good

I’ve received a few emails reporting that the Korean Mulholland Drive DVD look great, has a bunch of interviews and behind the scenes with cast and crew taken from the Universal Press Kit, uses the same great transfer that Universal released, has Chapter stops (for those of you who really need them), and get this… is available as a Region 0 DVD in NTSC. There are a few places on the net that sell the Korean Mulholland Drive DVD, and reports are that you can get this baby shipped for less that $25 US. The only thing this disc is missing is the DTS track, but it does include a 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track, which is just fine in my book.

Looks Like the Rumors Are True… Season 2 in 2003

I just received word from my contact at Artisan that although there is no official release date, 2003 at this point would be a safe bet. So although it isn’t an official confirmation, and the discs could potentially show up as a the last minute December release, it’s not very likely in my opinion. In either case, I am sure it will be worth the wait.

Julee Cruise Appearances in August

Word has it that Julee Cruise will be doing various appearances in promotion of her new CD “The Art of Being a Girl”. Check out her website for more details.

Rebekah Del Rio Live Performance on August 13th

Just a reminder, Rebekah Del Rio will be performing live at this years “Southern California RAINN Event” being held in Los Angeles on August 13th. RAINN is the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network which runs the countries only 24 hour hotline for survivors of sexual abuse.

Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD in 2003?

There has been a rumor going around at the Twin Peaks Gazette that the Twin Peaks Season 2 DVD Box Set from Artisan has been pushed back to 2003. I have some inquiries into Artisan, and should have some info in the next few weeks. I’m willing to bet that if we don’t get a press release within the next 8-10 weeks, the rumor will become a fact. What also supports this rumor is that at the recent VSDA, there was no mention made of the box set from Artisan. Anyways, check back these next few weeks for an update.

July 19th 2002

German Dune DVD Special Edition

Well, it looks like Germany will be getting what a 3 Disc Special Edition of Dune. It will include the theatrical version with a 5.1 German and English sound mix on Disc 1, the Alan Smithee TV version on Disc 2, and a bunch of Extras on Disc 3. Now I must say that I have never been a huge Dune fan, but if the extras include any sort of Deleted Scenes or Documentaries, you know I’m game. Also, note that the rumor is that the Theatrical version will be a new anamorphic transfer, however, some idiot did it off of a print with burnt in subtitles. Anyways, it should street in September sometime.

Lost Highway DVD News

Since the merger of USA Films home video catalog into Universal Home Video, no one has heard anything about USAs planned Lost Highway: Special Edition DVD. Today I got word from Universal that because of the merger, they are still looking into their catalog to see what they have legal rights to release. It could be some time before this release sees the light of day, but because sales were so strong on the Mulholland Drive DVD, I am sure we will see this most likely sometime next year.

Twin Peaks Festival is Exactly One Month Away!

This years annual Twin Peaks and David Lynch Festival is exactly one month away. Tickets are STILL available, but going very fast. Sixteen celebrities from Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, and Mulholland Drive, costume contests, dancing, gambling at One Eyed Jacks, plus as if that wasn’t enough, Julee Cruise and John Neff of Blue Bob performing live. Click here for more information.

Sound Info on the German Twin Peaks Region 2 DVD

Word has it that Episodes 1-7 will have a 5.1 Dolby English Audio track, plus commentaries, and a mono German and Italian dub track. Interesting enough is that the Pilot will only have a Dolby Stereo English Audio track, plus the mono German and Italian dub tracks. No DTS on this set, but I’m willing to bet that the Pilot with this version will be superior to the one that is out from Catalyst Logic.

German Twin Peaks Region 2 DVD Pushed Back to October 10th

I’ve just gotten word that Paramount has pushed back the release of the Twin Peaks Season 1 DVD set to October 10th. No word on why it has been delayed, but rest assured, it will be coming out. No word still on the long awaited US Season 2 box set.

Eraserhead DVD Release Looking Like September

This just in from the David Lynch.com Chat Room:

JOHNNEFF [7:50 PM PST]: It is in manufacturing now. Dave will have to OK a test disc when he gets back, then it will be just the press run after that.

David will be out of the country till mid August, so if all goes well, I would guess that we should see the DVD as early as September.

Cabin Fever Photo Gallery Online

Check out the Cabin Fever photo gallery online by clicking here. About a month back, I was lucky enough to hear some of the music score that Angelo Badalamenti did for this picture, and it was just awesome. Another interesting tidbit is that John Neff and wife Nancy both have parts in this film. I have a feeling that this film is really going to kick some major ass when it is released.

John Neff to Perform at the Twin Peaks Festival

It’s official. Yesterday, John Neff of Blue Bob confirmed that he will be playing a short set at this years Twin Peaks Festival. Julee Cruise and John Neff… what more could anyone ask for?

Thought Gang CD Available Soon

Speaking of John Neff, rumor has it that he recently finished mixing the long awaited Thought Gang album which should be available soon exclusively on David Lynch.com. So far, only two tracks have been released by the Thought Gang; “A Real Indication” and “the Black Dog Runs at Night”, which were featured on the 1992 Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me soundtrack. Apparently, Lynch and Badalamenti wrote and recorded several songs as the Thought Gang, however, nothing has been officially released or even heard of the project until now. As soon as I hear a firm release date, I will post it.

Rabbits 3 Is Out Now

Episode 3 of Rabbits is out now and it features the lovely Rebekah Del Rio.

Blue Velvet SE DVD

If you haven’t picked up the Blue Velvet Special Edition DVD, you really should. The documentary alone is worth the price of the DVD. Also, keep in mind that by purchasing the Blue Velvet DVD, you are indirectly letting MGM know that there is demand for Lynch on DVD and maybe they will pull the Wild at Heart DVD off the back burner and hopefully make it as great of a Special Edition as Blue Velvet is. Seriously, MGMs representation of Blue Velvet on DVD is by far the best that any film studio has done to give Lynch a proper home video release.
Steer Clear of the New UK Lost Highway DVD

I have just been informed that the new R2/4 Lost Highway DVD that was just released by Front Row Video is quite awful. Bad transfer, the print they used was full of scratches, and only a 2.0 audio track. Hopefully Universal will put out a descent version here in the US sometime soon; especially since Mulholland Drive was a big seller for them this year.

Thanks to Bernardo Matos for the good word.

Actor / Director Richard Green AKA the Magician from Mulholland Drive will be joining the list of celebrities at this years Twin Peaks Festival. For those of you who don’t know, Richard was a close friend of Jack Nance, and is responsible for putting together the superb Jack Nance documentary “I Don’t Know Jack – the Unsolved Life of Jack Nance” which is presented by David Lynch.
Lets Win This Fight

Possibly the best news I’ve heard all year. Hervé Lextrait, a viewer from France contacted MK2 and gave me the following statement from MK2:

First, MK2 plans to meet with Lynch in Cannes in the next week or so. Second, thanks to the thousands of emails they have received, they strongly wish to include Deleted Scenes on their upcoming FWWM DVD. All of this really depends on how things go with their negotiations with Lynch. They understand the great worldwide demand, and have asked to keep those emails and letters coming in, as it helps show the demand for doing this. Finally, the DVD will definitely be pushed back from the September 2002 release date to allow more time for negotiations.

Now is the time to help spread the word. There are two emails you can send to make sure we are heard: You can send an email to editions@mk2.com. If you haven’t heard back from MK2 after your first email, go ahead and write them another email. Be sure to send your email to both, and as always, be polite. Spread the word. Hit the message boards and newsgroups.

Special thanks to Hervé Lextrait for the awesome scoop!

Fight For Deleted Scenes on Region 2 DVD Still Continues

I was in the David Lynch.com chat room with John Neff a few nights ago, and he mentioned that there has been no word from MK2 regarding Lynch preparing the Deleted Scenes for MK2′s Region 2 release of FWWM on DVD. Since Lynch is in Cannes right now, it would be the perfect opportunity for MK2 to approach Lynch and cut some sort of deal. We can do our part as well. If you haven’t heard back from MK2, go ahead and write them another email.

New Julee Cruise Solo CD in Stores August 13th

The brand new long awaited solo full length release by Julee Cruise, “The Art of Being a Girl” will be released on August 13th from Water Music Records/Universal. This will be her first full length solo album in almost 10 years. Rumor has it that Twin Peaks fans may be in for a secret surprise hidden at the end of the disc.

Blue Velvet DVD Rocks (Mini Review)

Well, I just got a review copy of the Blue Velvet DVD. I watched the entire disc, and let me tell you… the transfer is clean, and the sound mix is outstanding, and the extras are to die for. To start, after all these years, of watching this film in Stereo, hearing the new 5.1 mix was like a breath of fresh air. John Neff really outdid himself on this one. I personally think it’s one of the best 5.1 mixes I’ve heard in a long time. If that weren’t enough, the documentary, let me just say is phenomenal. Jeffrey Schwarz is a true Lynch fan. He really went al out on this documentary. There was a scene of archive footage of Angelo and Isabella practicing by a piano that is just priceless. The Deleted Scenes montage was done very well. After watching it, I was sad that the footage hadn’t survived, but the way they presented it was the next best thing. The photo still section had some awesome behind the scenes pictures that really gave a great look at the mood of the set and how the actors enacted with Lynch and each other. Finally, a Lynch film on DVD done RIGHT. New Line could take a lesson or two from MGM. If you haven’t already pre-ordered this baby, click here to place your order and help support the site.

Although I can’t confirm it, I’m sure it’s highly likely.
News to be Slow These Next Few Weeks

Dugpa.com Design Me A Banner Contest

Well, as you know, I’ve been real busy lately. I am looking to change the top banner of my site. The one up there is an improvement, but still very dull and boring. Anyone willing to design a new one for me? The person that submits the one I choose will get a Mulholland Drive key ring and matchbook. The only real specifications are that it should have a space to the left where I can add my logo and it should be 633 pixels wide by 100 pixels high. It should also incorporate a collage of scenes from Lynch films. No need to use any of the graphic links that are currently on my banner. The deadline is Friday, June 14th. Good luck!

Eraserhead DVD Delayed

Lynch had this to say regarding the release of the upcoming Eraserhead DVD:

DAVIDLYNCH [8:34 PM PST]: I THINK ERASERHEAD IS ONLY A WEEK BEHIND – MAYBE MAY 7

April 14th 2002

More from Lynch on Mulholland Drive Blurring

Lynch had this to say on April 10th in his chat room at David Lynch.com:

DAVIDLYNCH [7:59 PM PST]: …FIRST – IF THE SHOT IS TIMED CORRECTLY YOU SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO TELL ONE BIT IF LAURA’S PUBIC HAIR HAS BEEN BLURRED – THIS PROBABLY MEANS SOME VIEWERS ARE EXPERIMENTING TO SEE LAURA’S PUBIC HAIR AND MORE ….. THIS IS WHY THE PICTURE WAS BLURRED – I PROMISED LAURA THAT I WOULD TRY TO PROTECT HER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND TOLD HER SHE WOULD REMAIN A BEAUTIFUL SILLOUETTE AGAINST THE WARM LIGHT COMING IN THROUGH THE CURTAINS…

DAVIDLYNCH [8:02 PM PST]: …SOME PEOPLE SEE IT AS A STRANGE CENSORSHIP – IT ISN’T AND LIKE I SAID – IF YOU CAN SEE THE BLURRING THEN YOUR SET IS NOT ADJUSTED PROPERLY AND THE WHOLE FILM IS WRONG – NO PROPER MOOD

April 10th 2002

Mulholland Drive Censoring is the Talk of the Town

I thought I would chime in here. Since yesterday, I have seen many… many more websites report and even scold Lynch for allowing the 2 second nude scene be blurred. One thing has bothered me is that some people actually have the audacity to compare this to what Lucas did with the Star Wars: Special Edition. HELLO! This is a 2 second scene if that, and it does not detract from the film, nor does it alter the storyline whatsoever. This is NOTHING like having Greedo shoot first. Give me a break. Anyways, the film looks and sounds great on DVD.

Mulholland Drive DVD Streets Today

So what are you waiting for? I’ll be grabbing my copy at lunch today. Also, before the rumors start, all you film purists should know that yes, there is a brief nude scene of Laura Harring that was digitally blurred from the waist down on purpose. Lynch however made the decision on this… not Universal. A quote from his chatroom on the subject:

DAVIDLYNCH [5:30 PM PST]: WE DID THAT BLURRING FOR THE DVD ON PURPOSE AS WE KNEW THAT PICTURES OF LAURA WOULD BE EVERYWHERE IF WE DIDN’T

I don’t think it changes the film at all, but just thought I would note this. There are multiple discussions going on over at Mike Dunn’s New Message Board, the Home Theater Forum, and also over at the Twin Peaks Gazette. What I want to know is if other foreign releases are digitally blurring the scene as well. I have been told that the Canadian version uses the same transfer. Anyways, pick up your copy today, or if you like, click here to help support the site and grab a copy from Amazon.com.

Commentary Tracks on Upcoming Blue Velvet SE DVD ?

MGM Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxemburg) just released a press release for the Blue Velvet SE DVD for a September release. The release will be a double disc, with mostly the same extra features as announced on the R1 DVD, but with two extra commentary tracks (one by cast and crew and another one by film students). Although no word of any commentary has been released for the R1 DVD, I couldn’t see why they would leave this out of the R1 disc.

Well, there hasn’t been much to report these past few days. Lynch and Neff are currently working on an upcoming episode of “Out Yonder” for David Lynch.com. No word yet on negotiations between MK2 and Lynch, but I guess they are still ongoing. Click here to check out an ad I found on the back of a Video Business Magazine. I’m starting to get really curious about this Deleted Scenes Montage that they mention, as from what I understand, Lynch did not edit and score Deleted Scenes from Blue Velvet to be included with this release. I’m working on getting an interview with the good people at MGM to find out more about this release.

DVDfile is reporting a June 4th release for the Blue Velvet DVD. This sounds about right with what I’ve heard. The odd thing is that they also mention a Deleted Scenes Featurette for Blue Velvet. I was under the impression that there were NOT going to be Deleted Scenes on this disc. However, maybe just a documentary on what was deleted ?! I am looking into it and should have some solid info by tomorrow.

I opened the box to find this red tissue paper. It was almost like Christmas. Anyways, Short Films DVD is just awesome.
MK2 and Lynch in Preliminary Talks About Deleted Scenes for FWWM Region 2 DVD

Tonight, John Neff posted the following on the Twin Peaks Gazette Messageboard:

“Well, Dave has talked to someone at MK2, but it is only preliminary, AND they have not received a budget. They have no idea what it might cost to do this. We will of course be as reasonable as we can, but to mix these like a film will take time and cost some money. It shuts the studio down to David’s stuff for a number of weeks, and requires a lot of his time, plus, the Avid or film editing. We’ll see. I will keep Brian posted and he can inform everybody.”

This is great news, but now we need to do our part and let MK2 know that there is GREAT demand for these Deleted Scenes. So what if they are Region 2. MK2 has no way of knowing that New Line received over 30,000 emails and letters from fans all over the world (25% from France alone). They are separate entities altogether. More demand = bigger budget = Deleted Scenes. Need I say more ? Send an email off to editions@mk2.com today, and spread the word ! Also, I am working on getting a universal form letter in French for those worried about the language barrier.

FWWM DVD in Region 2 from MK2… Possibly Another Chance for Deleted Scenes
Today I just received word that MK2, the French company and Rights Holders to FWWM, are planning to release Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me on Region 2 DVD in September of this year. Although no extras have been announced, there is speculation that MK2 will try and release Deleted Scenes on this disc. Now I don’t want to get anyones hopes up, and so far, I don’t believe Lynch has been contacted by MK2 for this release as of yet.

The question now is… Do you want a possible second chance to see those scenes make it to the public in some way, shape, or form ? Then let MK2 know today. Send them an email at: editions@mk2.com and show your support… even if you don’t live in France. As always, please, be polite, and when asking that they include Deleted Scenes, also request that the make the DVD as a Region 0 DVD (much like the Hong Kong Twin Peaks Pilot DVD and the UK FWWM DVD) so EVERYONE WORLDWIDE can play it on their home DVD players without buying a Region Free DVD player, and that they include an ENGLISH language track, just incase. Also, be sure to request that the scenes get edited and scored by David Lynch himself.

3-Legged Cat Productions to be at this Years Twin Peaks Festival

I have just gotten word that Mark Rance and his crew from 3-Legged Cat productions are going to be filming at this years Twin Peaks Festival. As you might know, 3-Legged Cat Productions is the company that filmed the documentary footage for both the upcoming FWWM DVD as well as the Twin Peaks Season One DVD set. If I were a betting man, I would bet that they are going to be using the footage as extras on an upcoming Artisan Twin Peaks Season Two DVD set. This might just be your chance to be part of Twin Peaks History. Check out the Festival Update page by clicking here.

Peaks DVD‘s Sell Way Beyond Expectations

In an article from the Chicago Tribune, it was reported that the Twin Peaks Season One box set sold nearly 150,000 in the first few weeks of its release. This is incredible, as Artisan has reported that their Twin Peaks VHS sales had “peaked” between 30,000 and 40,000. Just goes to show what happens when you do a quality release. Hats off you Artisan.

Twin Peaks Import Pilot DVD Available at Amazon.com

I just got word that the Twin Peaks Import Pilot DVD is now available from Amazon.com. Now keep in mind that the sound quality sucks, and the picture quality is better than VHS, but not nearly as nice as Artisans Season 1 DVD set. However, it does come with the proper TV ending, and it looks like it may be a while before Paramount gets off their asses and puts a proper Twin Peaks Pilot out. So if you are looking for a quick, cheap fix, now you can order it from Amazon.com.

Word Back from Lynch on the Deleted Scenes Situation

I just received word back from Lynch on why the Deleted Scenes were not included on the upcoming Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD. Here is his exact quote: “I honestly don’t know what the truth is. There are upwards of seventeen scenes, short ones, that could be completed. But first, they have to be found. Work print has to be made. We need to put it on the KEM (editor) and put it together. Sound has to be located, and put with the edited scenes. Then we have to gather sound effects and mix the scenes. Negative has to be cut. I have to go to the lab for color correction. A hi-def transfer has to be made, and then that has to be color corrected. The scenes have to be compressed for DVD, and that has to be evaluated. This will take a lot of time and cost a fortune.”

It is very disappointing that New Line did not spend more time trying to acquire and negotiate for these scenes, but I will tell you that I have seen the disc, and the audio and picture quality are nothing short of amazing. This is the best this movie has ever looked or sounded. Hopefully one day these scenes will see the light of day, but for now, they will remain in Twin Peaks.

Meeting with New Line Home Video
Earlier this week I had lunch with Mr. Matt Lasorsa, Senior VP of Marketing for New Line Home Video, and Mr. Michael Mulvihill, VP of DVD Content for New Line Home Video. The bad news is that we will probably not see the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD this year. The good news is that the reason that we won’t be seeing it this year is because New Line is still currently under negotiations with the rights holder to acquire the rights to include the Deleted Scenes that have been chosen by David Lynch to be featured on the disc. New Line wanted to let us know that their current position is that they do NOT want to release the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD without Deleted Scenes until every possible option has been explored. They are committed to making this upcoming DVD, THE definitive Fire Walk With Me DVD, and have been working very closely with David Lynch to ensure that the DVD will surpass all expectations of the fans.

New Line would also like us to know that there is no animosity between the current rights holder and New Line, and that their asking price for the Deleted Scenes is a fair price, however there are many options to be explored, and much more negotiating to do. I will add, that while the price from the rights holder is a fair price, it has a big cost impact on New Line’s Profit and Loss Statement given the number of units they estimate that the DVD will sell. They are working on ways to meet their corporate commitments and still be able to absorb the additional costs. When asked about what these Deleted Scenes could possibly contain, I was told that David Lynch was given a list of popular scenes from the script that fans have been asking for, and that none of them rang a bell. Since he has already chosen the scenes, I would be tempted to say that the scenes that we might see would be scenes much like the end Angel scene, filmed completely off the script. With this in mind, I am confident that New Line will do all they can to try and secure these Deletes Scenes, and put out THE definitive Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD.

Also, New Line would like to thank everyone for their interest and letters of support regarding their upcoming DVD. As soon as more news becomes available, I will be posting it here. So stay tuned !

Also check out my FAQ for updates on the spec list.

Reports from the Twin Peaks Festival
I just got back from the Twin Peaks Festival, and it was a blast ! While I was there, I met a lot of really great people as well as found out some interesting tidbits regarding the upcoming DVD releases.

First off, it seems that both New Line and Artisan will definitely be doing extras for their DVD’s. According to all of the cast members that were in attendance, both companies have been filming interviews with them to be included on the DVD’s.

In a talk I had with Kimmy Robertson (AKA Lucy Moran), she mentioned that the Series DVD’s were definitely being pushed back to 2001, and that she was glad they were pushing it back, as for the interview segment, they were not able to find Harry Goaz (AKA Deputy Andy Brennan) and now with the date pushed back, there would be a better chance of locating him and being able to tape his segments.

In a talk I had with Michael J. Anderson (AKA the Little Man From Another Place), he mentioned that the theme for the FWWM interview supplement would be “Twin Peaks… 10 years later.” Also, many of the cast members were aware about the possible inclusions of Deleted Scenes, but did not know the status of the negotiations.

I also found out that Mark Rance and his company “3 Legged Cat” were in charge of doing the supplements for the upcoming FWWM DVD. Many would know him on his work for the new Boogie Nights and Magnolia DVD’s which were just amazing !

And finally, Catherine Coulson (AKA the Log Lady) made a mention of the upcoming Eraserhead DVD. While nothing is set in stone as far as a release date, she did mention that last month, David had found some footage from Eraserhead that has been lost for a very long time; plans currently are to include it on the upcoming DVD release.

More Bad News
Today, I got the following email from Artisan:

We regretfully inform you, our previous street date of November for the Twin Peaks series has been delayed. Our marketing Department has pushed back the release until February 2001 due to legal issues such as securing the famous pilot episode.
Again, we send our sincere apology to all of the fans and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Delay on FWWM DVD Release Date
The Digital Bits rumor mill has reported that the FWWM DVD is set to street December 19th along with New Line’s upcoming Se7en Platinum DVD. This sounds about right, as recently, a few titles have been released in a press release for New Line’s upcoming October titles, and FWWM was not one of them. However, keep in mind that the reason for this delay is because New Line is still in negotiations with the rights holder for the rights to the Deleted Scenes. Lets still keep our fingers crossed. I will also be going to the annual Twin Peaks Festival next week and should have more to report when I get back.

Even More News On the Deleted Scenes
Today, Eric Thomas from the Twin Peaks Festival and Kimmy Robertson did a segment promoting this years annual Twin Peaks Festival on Comedy World’s “The Beth Lapides Experience”. New Line is trying very hard to secure these scenes for the disc. So still no definite word, but it’s great to know that they are still trying.

July 7th 2000
News from the Twin Peaks Festival 2000 Site !
Taken from the Twin Peaks Festival news section:

All of the stars were asked to contribute new interviews for the DVD and all agreed except for Richard Beymer As for the extra footage, New Line is still negotiating with the French company that owns the rights to that footage. However, it should be noted that the version that has been released IS David Lynch’s director’s cut and he does not wish the extra footage to be incorporated into the film. Adding them as extras is okay with him but he does not want the film re-edited.

Chat with New Line Cinema at Home Theater Forum
Incase you missed it, here is New Line’s response to the Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me DVD:

New Line is working very closely with David Lynch to insure that his personality is represented in the DVD of Fire Walk With Me. Mr. Lynch has personally approved a new 16×9 transfer of the feature and new 5.1 remix of the audio. He has also been instrumental in setting up contact with many of the film’s key players who will be included in a documentary on the DVD.

The deleted scene situation is unclear at this point, but we are working closely with David Lynch to ensure the DVD will be packed with extras.

Feedback from New Line
An anonymous fan sent this in which is supposedly a feedback reply from the New Line DVD Team. Here it is:

Good news, the Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me DVD is scheduled for an October release. The final added value is still to be determined however, there will be an original Trailer and Widescreen version included. Visit our website newline.com to learn about upcoming releases.

Thank you very much.
DVD Team

This would make sense, since the Twin Peaks Series Boxed Set has been rumored a November 14th street date. Still no 100% confirmation on either nor any confirmation of Deleted Scenes being included. Check the FAQ for more info.

TP Article in New Issue of Entertainment Weekly
There’s a great TP article in the Spring #540 issue of Entertainment Weekly that makes a brief mention of the upcoming TP:FWWM DVD. Take it as you will…
ABC canceled the show. Its 30th and final episode a two-hour Lynch-directed shocker that concluded with Cooper’s seeming demonic possession aired on June 10, 1991. In August 1992, an equally confounding prequel, TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME, appeared in theaters, meeting the disapprobation of critics and the fascination of cultists. Lynch is now putting together a DVD edition of that prequel. And, in his mind, he’s working toward a kind of conclusion, too.

Lynch: There is no ending. It’s part of a continuing story. The problem is the continuing story is in my head and in Mark’s head…. I visit it in my mind, TWIN PEAKS. It’s frustrating in a way because there are many clues and many threads that have yet to be followed. But it’s kind of nice having them out there, because they have not been solved, and because there’s threads to dream on.

Latest Report from Lynchnet
Production is underway for New Line’s new Fire Walk With Me disc. The disc will contain a new 16×9 enhanced transfer, and will possibly contain Deleted Scenes. There’s also a possibility of a Lynch interview about the film (but no commentary).

April 11th 2000
FWWM DVD Pre-Order Information
Today, the TP Festival Site reports:

The latest news (direct from New Line Home Video) is that FIRE WALK WITH ME is coming to DVD!!! David Lynch is working closely with the folks at New Line Cinema to bring you this highly anticipated release!

One of the main deciding factors in the decision to bring this title to DVD was a recent online petition that forwarded over 600 e-mails to New Lines video department!! Proof that this type of campaign and determination by the fans makes a difference!!

Unfortunately there is no word yet as to the content of the DVD and whether it will include any of Lynch’s unseen footage that is so highly sought after by Twin Peaks fans.

Fans attending the festival will be the first to be able to order the disc directly from New Line!
